Types and advantages of control valves

Regulatory type flanged valves are used to control the flow of media by varying pressure and flow. Three-way control valves are used to mix or separate flows, and cannot replace shut-off valves.   • With this article, we begin a series of materials devoted to individual elements of automation systems. In the first article we will get acquainted with the purpose, structure and principle of operation of solenoid valves with electric actuators.

    Valves are devices that regulate: pressure, temperature, direction of flow of liquid or gas in a pipeline.

    All valves can be divided into unregulated and adjustable, in which the geometric dimensions of the working windows or their number depend not only on the parameters of the fluid flow, but also on external influences.Valves can be distinguished: overflow, pressure reducing, safety, return and switching.

    An adjustable valve is a valve that changes the flow of liquid (gas) that enters or is diverted from an object of regulation.

    An adjustable valve is a variable hydraulic resistance with a variable flow area from zero (when the plunger fits into the seat) to a maximum (with the valve fully open) and with a variable coefficient of local resistance, because the flow rate varies in magnitude and direction.Most often, an adjustable valve is articulated by actuators and usually constitutes a common unit with them.

    Motorized valves are one of the most popular types of pipeline equipment. With their help, you can block and adjust the characteristics of the flow of liquid or gas, eliminate the emergency. They are widely used in utilities, gas and oil industries, and in agriculture.

    The advantages of these devices include: high speed of opening the stream or its overlap, reliability and durability in operation. The electric drive provides the ability to work with valves remotely from the control panel.

    The mechanisms comply with high standards for precise regulation of the temperature of hot water for supplying it to the heating system. The material of the valve, which works with an electric actuator, can withstand large pressure drops. Electric drives are made with a safety function.

    Pressure regulator   - a control valve, with an electric actuator monitors the pressure of the working medium in the pipeline section or in the technological system. Such a device consists of functionally dependent parts: a distributing effect on the regulatory part and a control valve that acts on the mass of gas or liquid.

    The executive mechanism of such a system is. The main purpose of regulatory mechanisms is to manage manufacturing processes. The device allows it to continuously monitor the characteristics of the working medium (pressure, flow rate of water or gas, temperature ...), and also prevents emergency situations, instantly turning on locking equipment, protects the lines from water hammer, and prevents the return passage of working media.

    When mounting the adjusting mechanism, it is necessary to trace the direction of the mass of water or gas in the direction of the arrows that are shown on the housing.

    The pipelines on which the control valve is installed must be evenly laid and securely fixed, and also protected from vibration. The device can be mounted both vertically and horizontally, but the drive must always be located on top. Be sure to leave space for dismantling or mounting the drive.

    Three way mechanism

    A three-way valve with an electric actuator does not carry out a change in the direction of movement of the mass of liquid, its pressure is constant, only the proportions of the passage of cold and hot water change. The design of the device is such that both cold and hot liquids are suitable for it, and a mixture of the desired temperature is obtained at the outlet.

    A fairly simple design of the part is a housing in which there are two inlets and one outlet. The regulating element is either a rod of a certain design, which can move in the vertical direction, or a ball rotating around a fixed axis. The working element does not completely block the mechanism, but only directs the flow of gas or water so that they mix.

    The drive system, receiving commands from the sensors, allows you to change the temperature of the fluid in automatic mode. The most accurate adjustment was received by a three-way part with an electric drive, therefore it is most widely used.

    The electric drive that comes with the device can be either a servo drive. A solenoid is a core coil through which an electric current flows, i.e. electromagnet. A servo drive is a device in which an input electrical signal controls mechanical movement with a compact electric motor.

    The materials from which this equipment is made include cast iron, steel and brass. Steel and cast-iron devices are installed in the main with a large passage of water or gas. Small parts are made from brass.

    Three-way devices are in demand products, since there are simply no analogues that could replace them. Only this equipment can ensure that the temperature of the working medium is maintained at the proper level. Well-developed technology for the execution of three-way mechanisms.     Locking mechanism

    The mechanism of the indicator of the location of the shutter is a housing with a movable sleeve, on which an internal thread is applied. The rotation stop and the scale located outside indicate in which position the shutter is. The shutter location indicator mechanism is mounted on the shaft of the worm.

    One revolution of the worm corresponds to a pointer movement of 1 mm. The result was an increase in the accuracy of the measurement of the shutter position. In addition, this valve design has reduced the effort to move the shutter.

    If a locking mechanism is used at some site, then multi-turn electric drives are used to control it. The shut-off valve with an electric actuator closes and opens the piping system, while changing the pressure in the system, they change the direction of fluid flow in the pipeline.

    Regulating pipeline valves of direct action, as is known, uses the energy of the same medium to regulate the parameters of the flow of the working medium in a certain section of the technological system or pipeline. Due to which the advantages of this type of fittings are: independence from external energy sources, accuracy of regulation, as well as reliability. However, there is a drawback, which often greatly complicates and limits the use of direct-acting regulators - this is the lack of flexibility. In other words, each controller is designed to be used in a very narrow range of system parameters. For example, if we use a direct-acting pressure regulator to control the outlet pressure of 5 bar, then, to change the setting, for example, to 10 bar (all other parameters are unchanged), we most likely need a completely different valve.

    The following types of direct-acting regulators are found:

    • pressure reducing valves (pressure regulators “after oneself”) designed to maintain a constant outlet pressure regardless of changes in inlet pressure or flow rate;
    • bypass valves (pressure regulators "to oneself"), ensuring the maintenance of constant pressure in front of the valve due to the transfer of part of the medium;
    • differential pressure regulators, which serve to maintain a constant differential pressure between two preset points of the system;
    • special regulators (tracking pressure regulators, shock absorbers, etc.)

    Indirect control valves, on the contrary, use external energy, such as electricity (electric drive), compressed gas energy (pneumatic drive), etc. The control signal for such regulators is also external. The signal comes from a logic device that directly implements control algorithms in the system. Thus, indirect control valves provide often needed flexibility.     PS-Automation electric drives are successfully used by ADL to complete control valves of its own and European production. The nomenclature of control valves is represented by two-way single-seat (both balanced and unbalanced designs) and three-way valves in the range of diameters from DN 15 to 300 mm, pressures from PN 16 to 40 bar, for environments with temperatures up to 300 ° C.

    It is worth noting that the installation of the electric actuator on the control valve, its adjustment and testing are carried out at the production complex of our company, which guarantees operability, minimum delivery times, and also allows you to make a special version of the control valve to the requirements of a particular system.
