How to connect a digital voltmeter to a VAZ 2106. Tags: voltmeter, installing a voltmeter, connecting a voltmeter, VAZ voltmeter

A voltmeter is a very useful device, especially when you have space to install it. In the well-known “six”, a voltmeter can replace the standard clock, and this can be done in a few minutes.

The watch is sealed in the torpedo hole with a plastic ring, which is visible in the middle of its case

After removing the clock from the dashboard, disconnect the wires from it and take out the light bulb. We do not touch the lamp - we will use it for a voltmeter, and place the wire terminals securely under the dashboard so that they are away from metal parts.

Connect the voltmeter

The UAZ voltmeter has only two contacts: “plus” and a common “minus” for powering the voltmeter and the backlight. The “plus” on the light bulb is supplied separately directly to its socket

The voltmeter should start working when the ignition is turned on. To achieve this, you can connect it via a relay, as described in the article "", but we are considering easy way, so we will connect to the glove compartment light wire. Voltage appears on it precisely when the ignition is turned on.

You can connect a voltmeter to the VAZ-2106 using a wire with a cross-section of 0.5 mm. When connecting to the glove compartment lighting, one meter of wire is enough for the eyes.

This is a socket with a glove compartment light bulb. Located in the upper left corner next to the lid

To connect, open the glove compartment. At the top left there is a socket with a light bulb. The “positive” wire that goes to it needs to be cut, then strip the two resulting halves, the additional wire for the voltmeter, and then these three wires together. Insulate the connection!

There is practically no space for manipulation in the glove compartment, so the work described above can be performed by pulling out the required wire from under the dashboard through the same hole in the clock.

We measure the wire that we connected to the glove compartment lighting in such a way that it is enough to reach the installation site of the voltmeter and that it is not under tension. Next, we bite it, clean the part that comes from under the torpedo, and put it on the “positive” terminal on the voltmeter body.

Voltmeter installed instead of a VAZ-2106 clock

With the remaining part of the wire we connect the voltmeter to ground, which can be done under the left nut for fastening the torpedo in the glove compartment. We lay it up to the nut, allowing for a small free play, and bite off the excess part, if there is any left.

Now we strip the wire from both ends. On one side we crimp another female terminal, and on the other, a round “bolt” terminal. We put the “mother” on the second terminal of the voltmeter, unscrew the torpedo mounting nut with a “10” key and screw it back, having first put the round terminal on the stud.

All that remains is to insert the socket with the clock bulb into the corresponding socket on the voltmeter body and we can consider that the work is completed.

This is how the voltmeter is illuminated when the side lights are turned on.

We put the negative terminal on the battery and turn on the ignition. The voltmeter needle should suddenly reach a certain value. The readings of the device will be underestimated due to the fact that it is connected to the interior wiring, and the voltage in it is lower than at the output from the generator. This happens due to numerous contacts “on the way” to the salon.

To get rid of the influence of contacts and get the most accurate voltmeter readings, you can take a more complicated route and arrange a full-fledged connection diagram. How to do this is described.

An ammeter is a fairly useful device. It allows you to control the current (which is very important, and sometimes more important than a voltmeter), that is, it will constantly show, with the ignition off, whether other consumers are using the battery. Also, the ammeter consistently indicates whether the battery is charging or is giving up its energy; the ammeter will also signal if the generator commutator is dirty, the generator brush is stuck, or the belt is slipping. These problems will be indicated by an arrow that behaves restlessly - swaying from a positive value to 0, sometimes lower.

In general, the ammeter in a VAZ car gives only positive impressions. After installation, it was discovered that the ammeter stably showed charging, which reached 8 - 10 amperes, and it continued constantly. After searching a bit on the Internet, I found the answer on a forum. It turned out that such ammeter readings indicate that the battery is not fully charged and the electrolyte has low density. After the electrolyte was brought to normal, charging returned to normal.

This was a living example in favor of the ammeter. There are heated discussions on the Internet about whether it makes sense to install an ammeter in a VAZ or not. Everyone can decide for themselves, especially if you take a more global approach, you can install the ammeter beautifully, make a case, attach it to a rack, panel, etc. But remember one very important thing - this work is carried out with an electrician, especially with a large cross-section wire, which is directly connected to the battery without a fuse. If this doesn’t scare you, then let’s move on to the theoretical installation of an ammeter on a VAZ.

Installing an ammeter on a VAZ.

As you noticed, on my blog, in a small poster on the top right, there was an article about installing an ammeter on a VAZ 2106 instead of a clock. This installation was carried out in my car, since the clock did not work, it was decided to install an ammeter in this place. Within the framework of this article, I want to consider only the theoretical side of installing an ammeter on a VAZ, how to implement this in practice - there will be a separate article.

How to connect an ammeter to a VAZ? If you decide to install it, then this is the first question that will arise in your mind. We remember our school physics lessons... and lo and behold! We remembered that the ammeter is connected to an OPEN in the measured circuit, that is, to an open in the wire that connects terminal “30” of the generator and the battery. How to connect can be seen in the diagram:

(The photo shows the location of terminal “30” directly on the generator. It looks like a bolt, the thickest wire is connected to it)

The backlight of the device is implemented in the same way as in all devices. An important point, is to install a fuse directly next to the “+” terminal of the battery, rated 30 A.

That seems to be all. We'll look at this in more detail soon, in a post about installing an ammeter instead of a clock. Subscribe to stay updated on new articles!

I installed a voltmeter (monitoring the voltage of the on-board network would not hurt), thought for a long time about where to put it, and decided to install a PTF instead of the power button (since there are none).

Hello. Is the voltmeter still alive? My second one has already fallen into disrepair.

It can be from the dimensions, or it can be like mine from the radio control wire

controversial place for installation, in my opinion.

I also installed only three in one and put it in place of the standard clock.

where can I buy one and for how much?

I bought it in a radio store for 200 rubles, from Aliexpress you can order it for 80 rubles

Thank you! screwed up ok!

Good idea! Cool idea. And if you need to mold the balls, then at the very least you can tint them)))

The place is not suitable at all. It just gets in the way.

in fact, it is located in such a way that when driving the steering wheel covers it, it is not noticeable

they are calibrated so you can tighten the regulator on the back to show the voltage on the battery

I didn’t spoil the plastic, but inserted it into the glove box, here it is - www.drive2.ru/l/5273023/

5 for ingenuity! If I didn't have b.c. I would also follow your example!

I agree, everyone does it for themselves)

h.z. I don’t like it to burn too much

I think in a month it will be fucked, in two months it will be removed =)

It’s not bad if you can’t purchase a Gamma instrument panel or on-board vehicle.
It’s convenient that it’s always in front of your eyes, but, in my opinion, the brightness of the backlight hurts your eyes (relative to the standard backlighting of the instruments)… I would recommend improving it. Reducing the brightness of the backlight when the dimensions are turned on - this will be a completely complete and convenient device!
I press plus. Good luck with your improvements!

To successfully monitor the state of charge of the battery, it is important to know how to connect a voltmeter in the car and how to decipher its readings. Since the advent of cars equipped with an on-board computer, the need for a separate voltmeter has faded into the background, because it does not provide complete monitoring of all electrical components of the car. The relevance of the device is also determined by the need to constantly monitor the battery charge, which is especially important in winter. In the event of a sharp drop in voltmeter readings, it becomes possible to take appropriate countermeasures and avoid unexpected engine shutdown.

Voltmeter - useful device for vehicles without on-board computer. Using it you can monitor the battery charge status.

The principle of operation of a voltmeter in a car

A voltmeter is a device with a fairly simple internal structure, the main purpose of which is to measure the voltage in the network. The principle of operation of a voltmeter is the interaction between an electromagnetic coil and permanent magnet or two electromagnets. The current passing through the coil deflects the voltmeter needle the more strongly, the higher the voltage value.

IN modern devices the readings are converted into a digital display, which is clearly visible even at night in an unlit car interior. The accuracy of such sensors is much higher than analogue “pointer” models, and depends on the discreteness of the main component - the analog-to-digital converter. The input voltage, flowing through the wires, is converted into a digital signal, which is then converted from binary code to a numerical value and displayed on a backlit display.

Selecting a voltmeter model

Digital voltmeter circuit.

The modern market of devices for cars offers a wide selection of voltmeter models. The most popular types of devices are:

  • analog “pointer” voltmeters - are installed mainly on domestic cars, connecting to dashboard instead of a watch;
  • digital sensors connected to the cigarette lighter socket;
  • digital voltmeters mounted in the dashboard.

The last two types of devices are most often used, as they combine modern appearance, accuracy of readings and ease of installation.

The measurement results that best correspond to reality are provided by voltmeters connected directly to the dashboard. Although their installation is sometimes fraught with some difficulties, by installing them you can get constant monitoring of the battery condition, which is especially important when there are a large number of connected nodes.

The cost of a digital voltmeter is quite low and ranges from 120-150 rubles if ordered through online stores. It has a standard rectangular shape, thanks to which it will harmoniously fit into the interior of any car. Backlight color - white, yellow, blue, green, red. Sometimes a problem arises with the high brightness of the screen, which acts as a distraction and makes it difficult to concentrate on the road, but this problem can be quickly solved with the help of a tint film.

Installation specifics

Table of characteristics of a digital voltmeter.

If there are no problems during installation with digital voltmeters that are powered from the cigarette lighter, then models installed directly into the dashboard often force drivers to think about the order in which they are connected.

Most voltmeters on the market have two or three wires for connecting to the network, although there are models with four contacts. The wires have standard color markings:

  • the red wire corresponds to “plus”;
  • the black wire is connected to the negative;
  • The white wire is responsible for controlling the backlight intensity and turning the device on and off.

In some cases, an unexpected problem arises when connecting the voltmeter in this way: it lights up dimly or refuses to work at all. The reason may be the alternative marking of the wires, in which the white wire is responsible for the “minus”, and the black wire for controlling the device.

The voltage sensor is installed in the standard place of the clock, but in some cases, when it is impossible to find free space for the voltmeter, you have to make a hole for it directly in the dashboard.

An excellent place to connect the device is the dashboard plug on the left side of the steering wheel. It is small in size and easy to remove and secure for processing.

Figure 1. Connection diagram for a voltmeter with a pulse stabilizer.

The voltmeter body has a raised surface: the frame around the display will protrude above the surface of the car panel. Thanks to this, the device will not fall inside the mounting socket, and will also hide uneven edges of the hole.

Inexpensive models of voltmeters may not have a separate wire for power; such a device is connected via three contacts on the sensor body (Fig. 1). In this case, the voltmeter is connected using a 4-wire wire from the computer drive (Fig. 2). The wide IDE format connector is cut off, and the remaining wiring is attached by soldering to the contacts of the car wiring. 4-pin contact provides good connection and makes it possible, if necessary, to quickly and effortlessly replace the voltmeter if it breaks down.

Regardless of the structural features of the voltmeter, before installing it, the car’s wiring diagram is studied in detail, according to which the location of the device’s connection is determined. It would also be a good idea to carefully read the instructions for the device, since the methods for connecting it may differ.

Interpretation of instrument readings

Installing a voltmeter is just the first step in gaining control over the health of your vehicle's battery and electrical system. Complete information can be obtained only by determining the basic values of the device indicators.

Standard battery voltage passenger cars is 12 V. The voltage readings of the on-board network will be slightly different, amounting to 13.7-14 V. If the values on the voltmeter decrease relative to the specified parameters, this may indicate a breakdown of the voltage regulator or a malfunction in the generator.

A decrease in voltage may also be due to the battery being discharged. This happens especially often in winter: in the cold, discharge occurs faster, and the presence of a heater in the car adds load to the network.

Figure 2. Diagram of connecting a voltmeter to a circuit.

If the voltmeter is connected directly to the battery terminals, then by its numerical values you can easily find out the battery charge level. Readings in the range of 12.6-12.9 V indicate that your battery is fully charged. As the discharge progresses, the voltage gradually drops. At a value of 12.3-12.6 V, the charge drops to 75%; at 12.1-12.3 V, the battery is approximately half discharged. With a gradual decrease in voltage to 11.8-12.1 V, the battery is considered 3/4 empty, and at 11.5-11.8 V you will no longer be able to start the car.

For getting complete information about the state of the network, it would not be superfluous to measure the voltage directly at the battery terminals, and then compare it with the readings of the on-board voltmeter. If, when you turn on the heating, high beam or other loads, the voltage will differ by more than 0.4 V, this may indicate an unstabilized on-board network. In this case, it is necessary to check the serviceability of the generator and voltage relay as soon as possible.

Conclusion on the topic

The question of how to properly connect a voltmeter in a car should be approached with all responsibility.

This simple device will allow you to keep a close eye on the condition of your battery, thereby providing an additional tool for monitoring electrical system your car.

Diversity modern models voltmeters, their accessibility for any driver and ease of installation make it possible to equip a car of any model with this device.

Perhaps, if not all, then many, the owners of the “six” (BA2106), in addition to the set of instruments provided by the designers, would not refuse to equip their car with a voltmeter. Installing it is not difficult, and for this you will need the device itself, a few screwdrivers, wires and a little of your time.

To do this, however, you will have to sacrifice hours, because... a voltmeter is most often installed in their place in the middle of the torpedo. This loss is not significant, because the watch is not particularly original, and many drivers have wristwatches, but a voltmeter will come in handy more than once in operation. After all, thanks to this device, you will be able to see even minor problems and fluctuations in the functioning of the generator and promptly respond to troubleshooting.

By the way, the voltmeter from a UAZ car is exactly the same size as a watch and can be installed in the dashboard without any problems. Also prepare a female terminal and a wire about 25 cm long. Be extremely careful when working with electrical wiring.

First you need to remove the terminal from the battery. Then remove the clock from the car dashboard. Pull the watch out of the dashboard along with the watch socket and the backlight lamp, while removing the sealing ring from them. The voltmeter is connected via a positive wire, which is connected in the glove compartment to its backlight bulb.

Voltage is supplied to this wire after the ignition is turned on. Therefore, the voltmeter will function in the same way as other devices. You cannot use the wires from the clock, because there is current here all the time and the device will accordingly be constantly on. The battery may be severely discharged as a result.

Having pulled out the lamp socket, remove the lamp power wire from the terminal, and then solder or extend the wire to this wire and reassemble in reverse order. At the other end of the wire, do not forget to attach the female terminal while simultaneously removing the fastener from the voltmeter.

The voltmeter itself is tightly fixed in the mounting opening of the torpedo instead of the clock, for which it is necessary to wrap the device in several layers of electrical tape and insert it into the sealing ring of the clock. The black wire of the clock is connected to the negative terminal of the voltmeter, and connect the pre-stretched wire to the positive terminal. Then you need to insert the socket with the backlight into the voltmeter and fix it in the standard hole of the clock and when you turn on the ignition, the device will display the value of the car’s network voltage.

If you are the owner of a VAZ 2106, you would probably like to have a voltmeter in your car. In this article, I will tell you how to install a voltmeter in a VAZ 2106 car.

A voltmeter will be installed instead of a clock; this element will be installed in the middle of the car's dashboard. Why exactly will we install a voltmeter in place of the clock? The clock in the VAZ 2106 car is not reliable or original. Most drivers have at least one clock in their car (for example, in a radio).
