Removing the old hub

The following tools will be required to complete the work:

  • two "17" wrenches;
  • universal key designed to remove the wheel;
  • set of heads;
  • wrench "at 22";
  • ball bearing puller;
  • jack.

Starting work, first of all, a support is installed under the car. Also under the wheels of the vehicle are shoes for stability.
So:

  • First of all, it is removed.

Note. If the vehicle has an anti-lock braking system, it is necessary to remove the ABS sensor from the front wheel.

  • Using a punch or a screwdriver, the protective cap is removed, which is located in the center of the wheel hub.

Note. In cases where the protective cap is damaged, it must be replaced.

  • Then, in the presence of a spring, it is removed from the axis of the hub.

  • After that, the clamping bolt is loosened, which fixes the hub fastening nut from unscrewing, then the nut is unscrewed and removed from the hub axis. If there is a thrust washer, then it must also be removed.
  • The front wheel hub is removed from the steering knuckle.

Note. In the event that the hub cannot be removed, a puller will have to be used.

  • If the inner ring of the bearing remains on the knuckle, then it is removed from the hub axis with a puller, after which the hub seal ring is removed.
  • The condition of the pin of the steering knuckle is checked. If necessary, then it must be replaced.

Before installing a new spare part, several procedures will be required to make the part last a long time.
For this:

  • The inner ring of the outer bearing is removed from the hub.
  • Then, the o-ring is removed from the rear of the hub and the inner ring of the inner is removed.

  • The hub is mounted on the appropriate mandrel and the inner ring of the outer bearing is knocked out with a punch and a hammer.

Note. At the same time, the ring should not be skewed, because the bearing housing in the hub can be damaged.

  • After this, the hub turns over and the outer ring of the inner bearing is knocked out.

Installing a new hub

So:

  • Using the emery paper, the hub is cleaned of grease and dirt, the burrs on the hub are ground. The condition of the hub is checked for mechanical damage, cracks and wear.
    If defects are found, then the hubs will have to be changed.

Note. In VAZ 2110 vehicles with anti-lock braking system, the condition of the sensor gear rotor is checked.

  • A new hub is taken. Before assembly, a thin layer of lubricant is applied to the outer bearing ring, as well as to the mating surface of the hub.
    The racetracks of the inner ring are also lubricated.
  • Then the new hub is mounted on the mandrel.

  • The outer ring of the inner bearing is installed in the hub. Using a tubular mandrel, which rests on the outer ring of the bearing and press, the bearing ring is pressed into the hub until it stops.

Note. During the pressing process, the bearing ring should also not be warped.

  • After that, the hub is turned over and the outer ring of the outer bearing is pressed into the hub in a similar way.
  • The inner ring of the inner bearing is installed. The sealing ring is mounted on the rear of the hub with working edges to the bearing. The bearings are filled with grease, which makes up two-thirds of the total amount of grease, then the inner ring of the outer bearing is installed.

Only after the above procedures can the hub be installed in its rightful place:

  • First, a thin layer of lubricant is applied to the back of the hub o-ring, and the hub is mounted on the pin of the steering knuckle.
  • A thrust washer is installed and a nut is screwed in to fix the hub.
  • The nut for fixing the hub is screwed, the inner rings of the bearing are pressed into the axle of the knuckle.
  • After the hub is installed, the axial play of the hub bearing is adjusted.
  • After the adjustment is completed, the clamping bolt is tightened, which fixes the fastening nut from unscrewing.
  • Then a spring is mounted on the axle of the steering knuckle.
  • A protective cap with grease is installed on the hub.
  • After that, the brake disc is installed and, if there is an anti-lock system, a sensor is installed.

The process of replacing the front wheel hub does not take much time, does not require much experience. It is enough just to study the design of the hub, see the corresponding video and photo - materials, read the necessary manuals for its removal, replacement, installation and you can perform the procedure yourself.

The very first sign of a breakdown is an unpleasant sound (hum) during the ride, it can change depending on the speed of movement, as well as on how you brake. Also very often the rubber on the front wheel wears out significantly, then at a speed of 80–120 km / h there is a strong vibration that gives into the steering wheel. During wear, the brake disc is very hot, because the bearing does not rotate correctly along its axis. However, the car service is not always nearby, and it is not worth delaying repairs. Therefore, do-it-yourself hub repair is an operation that every driver needs to master.

For home repairs, you will need a regular set of tools, which consists of wrenches, screwdrivers, and a jack. Also in the process of replacing the hub bearing, a hammer and chisel will be required. After performing these procedures, remove the front wheel, then using a wide screwdriver, remove the hub cap. The next step is to remove the caliper from the brake disc. Turn the drum with the stand onto yourself and unscrew the caliper mounting bolts, then take it to the side so that it does not bother you.

Then we proceed to remove the ball bearings and steering tip. When performing these works, it is necessary to pre-treat them with a substance that removes rust and facilitates the process of loosening. To remove the brake disc, just unscrew the two bolts that are screwed into the hub, then unscrew the central nut of the hub. Try to do this with a key, if you can’t crank it, then use a chisel. There is a groove in the central nut that allows you to insert a chisel. In the next step, unscrew the stand and pull the hub from the grenade.

After the hub is removed, proceed with its repair. it is worth knocking out carefully so as not to damage the device of the mechanism and the socket. If you can’t do it with your hands, then you need to do this work on a pressing machine. It is very important not to damage the bearing snap ring, since it does not always come in the kit, so proceed carefully.

The wheel bearing of the front hub is completely destroyed during dismantling, so do not try to keep it intact.

The rear wheel hub bearing is removed much easier and does not collapse during dismantling, and its service life is longer. After replacing the bearing, assemble everything carefully in the reverse order and go to the service station — you need to make the wheel alignment of the car, since when removing the tie rod the previous settings are lost.

7. Remove the wheel guide brake pads with caliper and brake disc.

8. Tighten the brake pad guide along with the caliper so that they do not hang on the brake hose and damage it.
9. Finally unscrew the bearing nut and remove the washer.

10. Insert bolts approximately 135 mm long and with M12 x1.25 mm thread into two diametrically opposite holes in the brake disc. Mounting bolts, heads that are on the "classic" (2106, 2107, etc.) are suitable
11. Return these bolts to the hub holes (opposite each other) over its entire thickness
12. Suddenly leading the brake disc along the bolts, as if on rails, hit them on the bolt heads and thereby remove the hub.


13. Turn away bolts of fastening of a spherical support to a rotary fist (Replacement of a spherical ball) and remove the SHRUS (grenade) from an aperture of the bearing.

15. Using a puller, press out the bearing into the cup, which is located on the outside of the knuckle, while the bolt presses on the inner ring of the bearing through the washer from inside the cam.

If there is no puller, then it is possible to remove the bearing race from the hub (see p. 17) (although this is also not so simple, but without a puller, but of a different kind, is even more difficult) and insert it into the hole where the bearing is located, beat with a narrow part through something metallic.

17. As a rule, after pressing out the hub, a bearing ring (cage) usually remains on it. To remove it, you need a puller. If not, then pry off with a screwdriver and remove the dirt ring ...



18 ... with a chisel, slide the bearing ring.

19. When remove the ring, then clean up the seizures from the chisel with a file.


20. Establish an antisplash ring and wrap it on a nave.


21. Clean, lubricate the inner surface of the steering knuckle.
22. A stripper press a new bearing into a rotary fist. At the same time, the large washer of the puller must rest from the inside on the knuckle so as not to damage its dirt rings, and when pressing in, the new bearing can be pressed through the old bearing, which will transmit force only through the outer ring.

23. Using a puller, press the hub into the bearing, pre-lubricate the hole with oil or WD-40. Now the puller washers abut against the inner ring of the bearing and the hub.

If there is no puller, then hammer the hub a little and withdraw the end of the CV joint so that you can get the hub nut. Rotating the nut, you will attract the hub with a SHRUS, as a puller. Hold the bearing on the inside of the knuckle.

  • socket head on "30";
  • narrow chisel;

Method number 3.It is much easier than method No. 2, since we can do without a puller, but there is a difficulty in its implementation, namely, further problems with adjusting the camber during assembly (the previous method did not remove the rack).

Before unscrewing the swivel mechanism, you must set two marks. On one of them, we mark with chalk the location of the adjusting bolt with respect to the hub strut. With the second mark, fix the position of the knuckle with respect to the strut with the thrust bearing. In the assembly of the structure, orient yourself on the labels.

We carry out operations:

  1. Dismantle the fist and remove the hub completely
  2. Take out the locking ring
  1. We turn to the vise, where we extrude the old p / w
  1. We clean the inside of the hub from grease and dirt
  2. We mount a new bearing in a vice with a hammer and a mandrel or puller
  3. We assemble the assembly in the reverse order (see paragraphs 1-4 at the beginning of the article)

To remove the bearing from the hub of the spigot, try using a chisel and a hammer by applying point impacts. It is possible to dismantle the bearing using a puller with a middle threaded rod and 2-3 paws. The paws are attached to the old hub clip, and the stem will abut against the pin.

How to change the front hub bearing

2. It is convenient to press the outer rings of the hub bearings in a vice, through wooden gaskets, using rings from old bearings as mandrels, which we orient with a smaller diameter of the cone inside the hub. Press the new rings into the hub all the way.
3. We apply Litol-24 grease or its analogues to the cage and the inner bearing ring of the hub. We put about 40 g of grease in the space between the hub bearings.
4. Install the inner bearing cage with rollers and inner ring in the hub, after applying lubricant to it.
5. Install the spacer sleeve.
6. Using a hammer and a suitable tool (for example, a mounting blade or the outer ring of the old bearing), we press in a new oil seal in the hub.
7. We fix the brake disk with the spacer ring on the hub with two pins and install the hub on the axle of the knuckle.
8. Apply grease to the outer bearing cage, put the inner ring on the pin, install the washer and screw on a new hub nut.
