Engine cooling radiator VAZ 2109. Do-it-yourself replacement of the cooling radiator

The main design feature of the engine cooling system motor vehicle is the radiator. The designers determined the radiator mount for the VAZ 2109 in the engine compartment.
It is located behind the decorative front grille of the car. On the VAZ 2109, the radiator mount has a special heating device.

Main design features

So:

  • At the bottom of the radiator there are pins into which rubber inserts are installed. These inserts are responsible for shock absorption of the radiator while the vehicle is moving.

  • There is a threaded pipe in the lower part; a drain plug is screwed into it.
  • If you look at the front surface of the radiator, in the right middle part there is a place for installing a fan switch sensor.
  • In the upper part there are two cylindrical protrusions for connecting rubber pipes.
  • There is one protrusion at the bottom.

Radiators are made of aluminum or copper alloys. Since such alloys are less susceptible to oxidation in interaction with heated liquids.
So:

  • On the front part there is a spacer transverse channel. It has holes for installing rubber inserts. They are inserted into the spacer there.

Note: Therefore, before installation, they must be soaked in soapy water.

  • The inserts must be inserted carefully so as not to disturb the structure of the rubber. Since the edges of the channel have sharp surfaces.
  • On the installed inserts, carefully place the radiator on the pins with an angle towards the engine.

  • After this, the top of the radiator tilts towards the front decorative grille.
  • Under the upper transverse channel there are two studs that are welded to the body.
  • A metal spacer bar is screwed onto them.
  • This strip secures the top of the radiator.

Note: a rubber gasket is first placed under the bar.

  • Secure the top of the radiator with two nuts.

This method provides for mounting the system radiator.

Interior heating device

Designers of manufacturing plants provide for the installation of a radiator heating system interior of a VAZ-2109 car. Under the panel of auxiliary devices, which is located between the two front seats, the design provides for the location of the interior heating stove.
It contains a frame for installing a radiator. Plastic protective panels are installed on this panel on both sides (passenger and driver).
They are attached to four self-tapping screws:

  • Unscrew the screws.
  • Take them off.
  • This frees up access to the interior heating radiator.
  • It is secured with four self-tapping screws.
  • They are installed in holes located on the upper and lower surfaces of the radiator.
  • Tighten the screws.
  • After this, connect the hoses of the interior heating system.

Note: before tightening the pipes, it is necessary to put fastening clamps on them.

Tip: Before installing, clean the clamps along the inner edges with sandpaper. This is necessary to remove sharp edges.
Since sharp edges can damage the rubber surfaces of the pipes.

This is the structural procedure for attaching radiators to the VAZ-2109:

Tip: Please note that before securing top part cooling radiator, it is necessary to install the upper pipes on it.

  • Secure them with clamps.
  • Only then attach the top bar to the vehicle body.
  • The following procedure for bringing the cooling system into working condition.
  • Install the lower pipe and tighten the clamp.

Note. The lower pipe can be easily installed from the inspection hole. First you need to remove the engine crankcase protection.

Assembling and checking the cooling system

Necessary:

  • Install .

The fan shroud is attached to the radiator with two bolts on the right side. On the left side, it is carefully put on the studs and screwed with nuts.

  • Then insert the cooling motor power supply terminals.
  • Check the tightness of the drain plug.
  • Stretch the clamps on the installed pipes.
  • Check the interior heating valve; it must be open and the lever handle must be in the extreme right position.
  • You just need to remove one hose that goes to the carburetor.
  • Pour antifreeze into the expansion tank. You need to pour carefully, looking at the carburetor fitting.
  • As soon as antifreeze flows from it, install the pipe and tighten the clamp.
  • Fill the tank to a level between the minimum and maximum marks.
  • Close the expansion tank cap.
  • Start the engine.
  • Leave it to work for 2-3 minutes.

At this moment, the system is filled and air pockets are removed. In case of poor warm-up, turn off the engine.

  • Open the tank cap.
  • Wrap the upper pipe to the engine block with a rag.
  • Apply a few sharp pressures on it.
  • Air bubbles should appear from the tank.
  • Then close the tank again.
  • Start the engine.
  • Wait 5 minutes.

The engine should warm up. Bottom pipe too. The temperature of the device should show 85-90 0.

Conclusion: the check of the engine cooling system can be considered complete.

It is necessary to carry out all work related to checking the operation of the structural systems of a vehicle with your own hands after watching the video. It is necessary to review and carefully study the written accompanying instructions.
Check out the attached photos.
Self-conducting Maintenance always accompanied by knowledge design features motor vehicle. In addition, this makes it possible to save a lot of money, because the price for repairs and diagnostics at a service station is quite high.

Trouble-free operation of any car is impossible without a cooling system. The main element of this system is the radiator, which is a reservoir made of synthetic material or aluminum, equipped with fins on the left and right sides.

Constant circulation of coolant through special channels allows you to maintain a certain temperature regime necessary for normal engine operation.

Failure of the cooling device, leakage of coolant, or insufficient coolant level can ultimately lead to engine overheating and end result to its breakdown. The VAZ 2109 radiator can be repaired after identifying the main reasons that could cause a failure in its effective operation.

Removing the radiator and its subsequent installation in place must be performed on a cold car engine. Before installing a new or repaired radiator, you should check it for leaks.

To do this, just plug the pipes, lower it into a bath of water and supply air with a pressure of 0.2 MPa. If bubbles do not appear on the surface within 30 seconds, then we can assume that the device has passed the leak test. All work on repairing and replacing the radiator can be done independently with your own hands, without the help of a specialist.

Dismantling a failed cooling system device is carried out in the following sequence. Photos that accompany the entire dismantling process will help you easily and quickly cope with the task:

  • remove the battery;
  • drain the coolant;

  • disconnect the wires of the electric fan switch sensor;

  • unscrew the two nuts and two bolts that secure the electric fan casing;

  • unscrew the two fastening nuts and remove the bracket;

  • disconnect the block with the wires through which power is supplied to the radiator fan motor;

  • tilting the casing with the electric fan towards the engine, remove the fan casing from the engine compartment;

  • loosen the fastening clamps and disconnect the two upper hoses leading to the radiator;

  • disconnect the lower hose;

  • tilting the radiator towards the engine, remove it;

  • remove the lower mounting pads from the radiator if they came out together with the radiator mounting pins. If necessary, in case of loss of elasticity and the presence of torn places, we replace them.

Installation of the cooling radiator is carried out in reverse order.

It is worth noting that one of the reasons for constant overheating of the radiator may be its clogging. In this case, it is enough to flush the radiator with high pressure of water.

You should immediately check the radiator for leaks

Heater radiator VAZ 2109

With the onset of cold weather, almost all VAZ 2109 owners are faced with problems. There can be many reasons for this, but one of the main ones is the failure of the heater radiator. Then, even at a normal coolant temperature of 90 degrees, barely warm air will enter the cabin, which will not be enough even to directly heat the windshield and side windows, not to mention creating a comfortable microclimate in the car interior. The heating device of the VAZ 2109 stove may fail or work with low productivity if there are air pockets. You can judge the presence of such a problem by the cold air coming from the cooling system deflectors when the tap is fully open. This problem can be solved quite in a simple way: set the front wheels of the car on a hill, open the heater tap all the way and turn on the gas.

  • The detection of coolant in the cabin can only indicate one thing: the heater radiator has lost its tightness and needs to be replaced. You can replace it yourself, without once again resorting to the help of a specialist; just study the provided photos well and follow the recommendations:
  • it is necessary to drain the coolant from the car’s cooling system, while the tap on the interior heater must be completely open;
  • on the right side of the stove there is a screw that is used to secure the rod clamp that regulates the heating damper windshield– it must be unscrewed;

  • unscrew the three screws that are used to secure the heater radiator;
  • remove the radiator from the heater housing;

  • loosen the hose clamps and remove them from the heater radiator pipes;
  • If necessary, we clean the device from dust, dirt, and foreign debris.

Installation is carried out in reverse order.

Very often, in order to reduce the noise of the stove fan, it is replaced with a more advanced model.

By watching the video provided, you can understand the entire work process in more detail.

The radiator of the cooling system on a VAZ 2109 car must be removed if a leak is detected, which in turn cannot be eliminated without dismantling. A damaged radiator should be replaced with a new one if the defect cannot be eliminated at home, or in a specialized workshop using special equipment. We will look at the removal process. To carry out repairs, prepare a standard set of tools and let’s get started:

  • First of all, turn off the power to the car by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Next, disconnect the power wire from the cooling system fan switch sensor, and also disconnect the block with the power wires from the fan motor.

  • Remove the cooling fan casing by unscrewing the two nuts securing it to the radiator and the two nuts securing the bracket. Tilt it slightly forward towards the engine and pull the cover out of the engine compartment.
  • Now we need to drain the coolant from the radiator into a previously prepared clean container, since the antifreeze can then be reused. For draining, there is a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. When draining, follow the safety rules, namely, the engine must be cool, wash your hands thoroughly with soap if antifreeze gets on them, if drops of liquid get into your eyes, consult a doctor, as it is poisonous.
  • After the system is drained, loosen the fastening clamps and disconnect the two upper and one lower hoses from the radiator.

  • Move it towards the engine and pull it out. There will be softening rubber pads on the lower legs of the radiator; remove them; if they are damaged, replace them with new ones.

This is complete. Troubleshoot. If it was not removed for replacement, then before installation, it is recommended to rinse it with water and check for leaks. To check, plug all holes and drain hole bring the hose from the compressor and, having secured it, begin to pump air and, at the same time, without ceasing to maintain pressure, lower the radiator into a bath of water. The presence of air bubbles will indicate a seal failure. Reassemble in reverse order.

VAZ 2109, 21099 cars are equipped with injectors and carburetors. Moreover, both versions of the car have a cooling system.

How does it work

The operating principle of the cooling system (CO) is as follows:

  • The pump drive operates from the timing belt;
  • The system has a volume of 7.8 liters, if you take into account the stove;
  • The temperature is controlled by a sensor installed in the cylinder block jacket. Temperature readings are displayed on the instrument panel;
  • When the engine is running, liquid from the jacket passes into the radiator (heat is removed there) or into the thermostat (work on a small circuit necessary to warm up the engine);
  • Then the cooling liquid, using a pump, passes into the cooling jacket of the engine (injection);
  • Due to the pipelines, coolant circulates through the system;
  • CO uses a centrifugal pump;
  • The radiator is a tubular-plate, dismountable, equipped with a plastic expansion tank;
  • Inside, the radiator has aluminum tubes and cooling fins, but there is no filler hole;
  • An expansion tank is used to fill and top up coolant. The fan switch sensor is also located there;
  • The tank is equipped with a filler neck, inlet and outlet valve;
  • To drain coolant from the system, you need to unscrew the drain plugs on the tank, radiator and cylinder block.

If you understand in detail the components of the cooling system and their functions and features, you will be able to carry out repair and maintenance work without outside help, change the radiator or individual components of the coolant.

CO elements

The cooling system used on the VAZ 2109 operates at low pressure. After studying the components, you will learn about their functions and features.

Element

Peculiarities

It ensures efficient, stable operation of the system. The pump is used to pump cooling liquid, which facilitates its movement along a small or large circuit. The pump consists of a housing, an axis with a pulley located on it, connecting to timing belt, and impellers made of plastic. The latter allows the coolant to move. A bearing lubricated with antifreeze is installed between the axle and the housing. Because of this, the presence of water in the system is unacceptable. Otherwise the bearing will collapse

Plays an important role, although in practice the CO can do without it. The system works in such a way that the engine first warms up to operating temperature (about 90 degrees Celsius), after which it is necessary to further cool the liquid. First, the coolant moves along a small circuit - through the jacket into the stove radiator, and then the excess is returned to the expansion tank. But when the operating temperature is reached, the thermostat begins to move the coolant flow into the radiator. A thermostat can be called a mechanical valve that automates the operation of the CO. Hot liquid acting on the thermostat bimetallic plate deforms it, which is why the coolant supply valve to the radiator can open or close

Radiators

The SO VAZ 2109 has a pair of radiators - a stove and a main one. Their design is the same regardless of whether you have a carburetor or an injector. At the same time, there is a noticeable difference between the main and stove radiators. The main one is larger in size, they perform different functions, plus the main one has holes for a sensor that turns off the fan. If the stove radiator can be connected to operation at any time by pressing a button, then the main radiator operates in automatic mode when certain operating parameters of the CO are achieved

Expansion tank with plug

A constant pressure is maintained inside the CO, which ensures efficient coolant circulation. On the VAZ 2109, the system is designed so that at high pressure the liquid does not boil when it reaches 100 degrees, but at higher parameters. This increases engine reliability. Pressure support is provided by an expansion tank with a cap, a pair mechanical valves- inlet and outlet. The inlet valve is activated if the pressure drops to 0.13 atm. The second one comes into operation at the moment when the pressure is above 1.3 Atm.

Pipes, clamps

Do not underestimate the role of pipes and clamps in the CO, since it is through them that the coolant is supplied to the required points. When replacing, under no circumstances use cuttings from other pipes that do not correspond to the parameters used previously. Plus, if at least one pipe is damaged, everything will have to be replaced as a set, and not separately

Looking at the radiator (main), below you will see a pair of wires and a yellow device twisted into the hole. This is the electric fan switch sensor. Another sensor is also located in the motor block - temperature. It transmits information to the electronic unit controls or pointer

Electric fan

As a standard, the VAZ 2109 is equipped with fans equipped with 4 blades. But if you want to achieve greater efficiency, we recommend replacing it with a 6-blade electric fan. This will increase the air flow while maintaining the original power and rotation speed. Heat from the heater radiator begins to flow inside the cabin when the tap is opened. There is a fan under the hood connected via a rheostat. It regulates the rotation speed of the impeller. The switch is located under the audio system, near the heater damper control levers.

When planning to replace an electric fan, work should be done through the engine compartment. There is no need to dismantle the snail.

Replacing the radiator

The radiator is replaced if there is a leak in it. In some cases, it can be repaired by soldering the leaks. To make sure that the device is repairable or needs to be replaced, it is better to first carry out a small check

To check, you need to dismantle the radiator, close all pipes and place the devices in a bath of water. We supply air under pressure and check. If bubbles begin to appear after 20-30 seconds, there are holes in the radiator and they can be found without any problems.

Having gathered our strength, we carry out the replacement.

  1. Disconnect the negative from the battery or remove the battery.
  2. Drain all coolant completely.
  3. If you have an injection car and not a carburetor, you will need to additionally remove the air filter.
  4. Cut the clamp that holds the wire harness in place. Disconnect the electric fan wiring harness.
  5. Remove the throttle linkage clamp. It is located on the fan shroud.
  6. Disconnect the bleeder hose connected to the thermostat.
  7. Disconnect the supply hose. It is connected to the jacket pipe.
  8. Remove the steam exhaust hose.
  9. Unscrew the nut that holds the radiator to the body at the top. The same bolt holds the fan shroud.
  10. Tilt the radiator slightly towards the engine and remove it by lifting it up. Dismantling is carried out directly together with the electric fan.
  11. Loosen the tension on the clamps and disconnect all hoses going to the radiator.
  12. Unscrew all the fasteners holding the casing with the electric fan and the radiator itself.
  13. Disconnect the radiator from the fan shroud.
  14. Remove a pair of lower fixation pads from the radiator. Examine the condition of the pillows. If they are worn out or have lost their original elasticity, it is better to immediately replace them with new ones.
  15. Moving in reverse order, replace the old one. new unit. Don't forget about the lower support pillows.
  16. Pour into the system new fluid cooling.

The engine cooling radiator on the VAZ 2109-2108 does not have to be changed very often, and this is mainly due to its leakage. Of course, there are those who like to repair them, that is, resort to soldering, but still more reliable option- this is a complete replacement.

To remove the radiator from the car we will need the following tool:

  • head for 8 and 10
  • ratchet handle
  • screwdriver flat and Phillips

Instructions for removing and installing a radiator on a VAZ 2109-2108

Before proceeding with dismantling, you must first. Then definitely. Once that's done, all that's really left to do is remove the cooling system pipes. So, two pipes are at the top, and they are clearly shown in the photo below. First, unscrew the clamp bolts:

Then we remove the pipe and hose, the result of which is shown in the picture below:

Then we proceed to the lower pipe, having also first unscrewed the bolt securing the clamp, and remove it:

All that remains is to disconnect the two wires from the temperature sensor, which is located on the right side of the radiator. This is shown more clearly below:

After this you can start withdrawing. Carefully move the radiator slightly forward towards the engine:

And just as carefully, we lift it up, making sure that it does not cling anywhere during dismantling, so as not to damage it:

If replacement is necessary, you must buy a new one and install in the reverse order. The price of a new radiator for a VAZ 2109-2108 is about 1100-1500 rubles and differs depending on the manufacturer and material of manufacture.
