We have already talked about cars of the new VAZ-2110 family more than once. True, speaking of the VAZ-2110, 2111 and 2112 cars, we still tried to avoid categorical conclusions, because then it was not about marketable products, but about the so-called running mock-ups: cars designed for finishing tests of the entire structure. And so it happened: the long-awaited "ten" finally got on the conveyor.

Despite the fact that even now many parts of this car continue to be made using workaround technology, we can safely judge what happened in the end. And in order to “tie” our grades to an already familiar reference point, we conducted a short duel test of the “tens” and the VAZ-21099 that had just come off the assembly line.

APPEARANCE

Cars are usually called nicknames. Having met the figure of eight clothes, she was dubbed the "chisel." It's okay: very soon, most motorists began to give preference to just these cars, and to this day the VAZ2108-099 family is the leader in the domestic automotive industry.

What about the top ten? Only a few have seen it, but the Tolyatti men have already come up with: "pregnant antelope." Will this somewhat long name take root across the country? And how would you dub the VAZ-2110?

The car is really bloated, it looks very heavy, heavy. In addition, the appearance of the machine is not integrity. But it is unlikely that the designers will be reproached with the fact that they copied the "top ten" from some foreign car.

INTERIOR

Transplanting from the "ninety-ninth" to the "top ten", despite the apparent puffiness of this machine, for some reason you experience a feeling of tightness. Perhaps this is due to the relatively small glazing area and the impressive front pillars heaped towards the driver.

The new car is less tolerant of tall drivers and, compared with the "ninety-ninth", here, adjusting the seat in length, it is necessary to "rest" against the limiter and tilt the back.

The VAZ-2110, which got onto the conveyor, is a kind of transitional car and is structurally largely unified with the vazov front-wheel drives of the previous generation. Today's “ten” is equipped with a VAZ-21083 engine and the same gearbox, but with an additional lock for reverse gear: to translate the lever to the “R” position, it is necessary to slightly drown it.

A distinctive feature of the current conveyor VAZ-2110 is also the fact that most of the facing panels and elements of interior decoration continue to be done “on the knee”, that is, bypass technology.

The features of the interior of the VAZ-2110 we described in previous publications. And here are impressions based on comparison.

In general, from the point of view of ergonomics, the "ten" is better than its predecessor. Using controls and additional equipment is more convenient here, although the quality of performance of many elements leaves much to be desired. The layout of the front panel and instrument cluster, although far from ideal, are undoubtedly more successful than on the VAZ-21099.

Lack of visibility is related to our duelists, especially backward. The Ten was so shocking: the rear shelf, for some reason ridiculous white, is all reflected in the glass. The shiny plastic on the upper part of the front panel also sins - its glare on the windshield is annoying and distracting.

Since both engines have almost the same power units, we will not ride the race, but talk about other driver sensations.

SMOOTHING, VIBRATION

In this matter, we unconditionally give the palm to the VAZ-2110 car. Unlike the "ninety-ninth", this car perfectly passes minor roughnesses on the road, practically does not transmit characteristic blows to the floor of the body and seat cushions and swings much less on gentle waves, saving the driver and passengers from strong vertical accelerations.

But the “ten” transmits more vibrations to the steering wheel, and the car more “rolls over” the body in turns.

The VAZ-21099 is stiffer, and vibration load is higher here.

CONTROLLABILITY

In normal driving modes, the VAZ-21099 demonstrates clear and smooth reactions to steering actions. The level of reactive effort on the steering wheel is close to optimal in the average angles of rotation, but it is practically absent in the “near-zero” zone and is clearly large at angles of rotation of the “steering wheel” of 120 ° or more.

“Ten” in similar conditions looks worse, and the main problem is that this car does not give the driver a sense of cohesion with the car. This is a completely different nature of reactions to control actions: the car is too lazy, and in order to go from a straight section of the road to moving along a curve, the driver is first forced to turn the steering wheel at a clearly larger angle. And as a result, it turns out that the car rotates in a steeper arc, but this is not felt by the reaction on the steering wheel. Due to the lack of power response of the steering, it is necessary to control the trajectory of the movement in the turn only visually, and also with the help of the vestibular apparatus.

In tight corners, when the coupling properties of tires reach their limit values, the VAZ-21099 shows a pronounced understeer, trying to smoothly slip the front axle to a larger radius. Note that the car allows the driver to feel and, most importantly, control the lateral sliding of the wheels. The reaction to a sharp decrease in fuel supply in a turn at the “ninety-ninth” is very logical: a definite “screwing in” and skidding of the rear axle.

Machine 2110 in extreme modes was two-faced. On the one hand, the “ten” behaves more neutrally: the sliding of the wheels of the front and rear axles begins almost simultaneously. This is a plus. But as soon as the wheels slide, the reactive force on the steering wheel drops sharply, and the driver begins to have problems. Moreover, all the bumps in the road and other dynamic forces strive to wrest the "steering wheel" out of hand.


Despite the fact that the luggage compartment of both cars is the same, the cargo compartments vary greatly in shape. The trunk “ninety-ninth is elongated and has too high loading height. It is more convenient to load the “top ten”, in addition, the presence of a hinged hatch-armrest in the back of the rear seat allows you to transport long items, such as skis, in the passenger compartment of this car. But the back itself, alas, doesn’t recline here

You dump gas in a turn, and the car starts to be very reluctant and thoughtful to turn around the vertical axis. In principle, this is the same “screwing”, but it arises somehow inaudibly and is difficult to predict.

A similar lethargy is observed in the event of a skid of the rear axle: the "ten" hangs in the skid and reacts with a significant delay to corrective actions. And yet, due to the more neutral nature of the understeer in a tight corner, the wheels slip here later than on the VAZ-21099.

The difference in the behavior of both cars will be felt not only by those who like to scream with tires in turns. If you sit in a VAZ-21099 and accelerate well in a straight line, then, correcting the inevitable deviations of the car from a straight path, you will encounter only one drawback already mentioned: a very weak reactive action on the steering wheel at small angles of deviation. It’s worse with the “top ten”: this machine at high speeds generates uncertainty, a desire to dump gas, it makes you be more tense ...

WHO whom?

Even if we do not take into account such a criterion as price (and the difference in this parameter between our current duelists is enormous), we are inclined to believe that the VAZ-21099 is still winning in terms of the set of consumer qualities. And the “ten” reminded us of Zhvanetsky’s famous joke about a man who made a new suit. “Do you have complaints about buttons?” “There are no complaints about buttons!” Indeed, many technical solutions embedded in the “top ten” themselves are worthy of a positive assessment. But when they were brought together, the whole image did not work out.

We have the impression: in the form in which the VAZ-2110 car now exists, it is not able to compete with foreign classmates in the Russian market. And we can only hope that sooner or later the plant will find the strength for a whole range of finishing work. I'd like it to happen soon.

The VAZ-21099 has been produced since 1990, in 2004 the production of the model from Tolyatti was transferred to Zaporozhye. Her heir, the VAZ-2110, lasted on the Togliatti conveyor from 1996 to 2008, after which he “moved” to Cherkassy (Bogdan plant). Moreover, both ZAZ and Bogdan have a small-site assembly.

“Lada-21099” and “Lada-2110” are based on a single platform, due to the Ukrainian assembly, the difference in price of two generations is small (about 8000 UAH). The machines we tested are equipped with the same power units - a 1.6-liter 8-valve engine with a mechanical 5-speed gearbox. Motors are simple, moderately powerful (80 hp) and high-torque (120 Nm). By today's standards, engines could be more economical and durable, but they are serviced at almost any service station. In addition, the “ten” can be equipped with the same 1.6-liter engine, but with a 16-valve cylinder head. It is somewhat more powerful (89 hp., 131 Nm) and more fun spinning "on top", although it is more difficult to maintain and repair.

Gearbox - no options, this is the only mechanical “five-step” mechanism on all front-wheel drive Togliatti structures. On both copies, we noted the difficult inclusion of reverse gear (which is typical for many non-rolled domestic cars), and on the "nine" also muffled transmission howls in fifth gear.

Outside and inside

What essentially distinguishes the two “sisters” is the bodywork. At the “dozens” it is more modern both externally and in a lot of little things that determine the level and class of the car: noise insulation, ventilation, door sealing. But the massive unpainted “ninety-ninth” bumpers are more practical: they are not afraid of scratches, withstand light impacts. The difference in clearance, although insignificant (0.5 cm), also indicates a greater practicality of "21099".

A higher doorway (+1.5 cm) “Lada-2110” facilitates landing behind the wheel, a low boot threshold (74 cm versus 87 cm for “21099”) - loading operations. The hood of the “tens” is held by gas shock absorbers, and not by the long knitting pin, like the “nine”. The Lada-2110 trunk lid is opened not only in the old-fashioned way - with a key, but also lifted by command from a button, and we found removable plastic containers for small items in the floor on the sides of the spare wheel. The "ninety-ninth" cargo compartment is slightly smaller (-23 l), but to increase it, both cars have a rear sofa. And the “ten” also has an armrest, behind which a hatch in the trunk.

The tilt of the steering wheel is adjustable for both cars. Front seats "Lada-2110" with better lateral support, but due to the smaller adjustment range, they are closer for tall people. In addition, the “ten” in front is narrower “in the shoulders” (-3 cm). Visibility is better for the representative of the older generation, since she has a thinner roof rack. In the "base" of both cars are a central locking system and front electric windows. The “dozens”, in addition, has an immobilizer and a thermostat-automatic heater, “fog lights” and alloy wheels, the “nine” has an on-board monitoring system.

The chassis of both models is designed for our roads. But the best sound insulation "Lada-2110" provides greater comfort.

The sound of the “dozens” units is quieter and softer in timbre, there are no such vibrations on the gearbox lever and handbrake, large plastic parts do not “match” them to the tone. In addition, the streamlined Lada-2110 creates less aerodynamic noise at high speed.

But in dynamics and operation, the running difference is almost imperceptible. At the beginning of acceleration, both Lada pulled confidently, but "without a twinkle", and only with the promotion of the motor acceleration increases. Less rigid in front of the body of the “tens” rolls rolls in sharp turns. From the “nine” you expect more acute reactions. But unlike the VAZ-2109 with a ninety-ninth hatchback body with its heavy stern on the snake, it does not reveal significant advantages over the top ten. However, it is more important for budget cars that their behavior, even with extreme maneuvers, is understandable and predictable.

Energy-intensive suspensions of Ukrainian VAZs are not afraid of potholes even at high speeds. At the same time, small irregularities are often transmitted to the body, and large ones are easily absorbed. In general, the “dozens” chassis seemed more comfortable when driving through bumps and pits, but, most likely, the point is better sound insulation.

Consider the differences

The differences that we recorded are such that writing them to the asset or to the liability of each model is up to the individual buyer. What seems like a flaw to one owner may turn out to be a plus for another. But there are two uniquely significant “differences”: simplicity and the familiar appearance of the “nine” and the higher price of the “tens”. In our opinion, this thousand “green” surcharges just puts everything in its place.

Variations

Both Lada, in addition to the sedan version, have other body styles, each with its own. The Cherkasy plant Bogdan, in addition to the top ten, produces the Lada-2111 station wagon, and in Zaporozhye the 5-door hatchback Lada-2109, akin to the “ninety-ninth” model, is produced.

Few people saw the "ninety-ninth", because this car has a long history and continues to run along the roads. The four-door sedan-style body, made in the style of cubism, is well recognized in our country. Over the years, the release has not changed in any way. It is the "ninety-ninth" model that became the basis for the creation.

“Ten”, before appearing on sale, went through almost a decade of development and improvement, during which it lost the freshness of design solutions. But nevertheless, the exterior of the car can compete with the appearance of inexpensive foreign cars.

The profile part of the body is wedge-shaped, giving the model an aggressive look. Rounded headlights merge with side turn signals. Such seemingly small elements create the image of a stylish car. Cheap plastic caps on wheels stand out from the “dozens” appearance flaws, but they can be replaced if desired.

Car interior

The new model, compared with the "ninety-ninth" of the old years of release, has an updated interior and a full dashboard. Now on the panel there is a tachometer, speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature sensors. There are also eight warning lights, the indicators of which are easily readable behind a conveniently located steering wheel. In the interior of this model, all parts are made with simplicity and functionality.

The salon, in comparison with the salon, is at a higher level in terms of convenience and decoration. In tenth models, the color of the upholstery often matches the color of the car. The steering column is adjustable in height. The Ten is even equipped with an on-board computer that checks the health of all systems every time the engine is started. It also recalls seat belts and open doors. When the test is completed, the computer emits an electronic signal.

The rear seat has an armrest with a hinged lid for glasses and small items. This element also serves as a “hatch” for access to the trunk, which is very convenient when transporting long loads. The seat cushions are folding, so the luggage compartment can be increased.

Running features

Although the reputation is not always good, the car is great for moderately fast trips around the city. For a car developed in Soviet times, it develops good speed. "Ninety-ninth" has a soft suspension with a long stroke, which leads to a roll when the car enters the corner at high speed.
