What to choose running lights on vaz classics. All daytime running lights

Many motorists have not yet installed daytime running lights on their car, but maybe they have thought about this for a long time. It’s no secret that the lack of running lights, as well as the low beam / fog lights turned off, can cause your vehicle to be stopped by a vigilant traffic inspector, which for most drivers is not very desirable, unless the latter have a lack of communication with people and are happy any company at any time.

In addition, if you use dipped beam or fog lights as daytime running lights (hereinafter DRL), you will probably have to change the lamps in these headlights much more often. There is still a moment of increased gas mileage with constant driving with low beams on. Of course, this expense is negligible compared to the main, but still it takes place.

If you have a certain amount of time (depending on skills and experience) and desire to correctly install DRL on a car, it is not such a difficult task for people who can hold a soldering iron and crimp terminals with wires, and in this article I will tell you how to do it .

Of the tools and materials we need: a crimping device (if there is some dexterity, pliers are also suitable), a soldering iron, wire cutters, a knife, a lighter (as an option for tightening the shrink tube), 3-4 meters of a two-wire cable in 2x1.5 PVA insulation (2x0 possible .75, if DRLs are LED, not foglights with halogens!). This wire is needed for parallel connection of two lamps with each other.

You will need a standard automotive relay for 12 v., Four-pin, reed switch (any), a single wire with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 mm. about 2-3m., plastic clamps, heat shrink. It seems to be all.

Now a few words about connection options.

Option 1. You can make sure that DRLs are turned on when the ignition is turned on and not turned off until the engine is turned off. This is the easiest option. The negative wire is attached to the car body in any convenient place, the positive wire - to the plus from the ignition switch or to terminal D of the high-voltage module, preferably through a fuse (not shown in the diagram).

Option 2 The same option, but when you turn on the dipped beam - DRL go out. In this case, we connect the plus as in the first embodiment, and the minus to the plus wire of the low beam lamp (either of the two). The fact is that an incandescent lamp consumes much more current and has a much lower resistance than LED DRLs and therefore, when DRLs are turned on in this way, the filament of the lamp will not heat up even to the minimum glow in full heat, and at the work of DRL, the resistance of the filament of the lamp ( even warmed up) will hardly affect.

As soon as you turn on the low beam, a plus appears on the minus of the DRL, and they go out. True, if you turn on the far - DRL will light up again. In this case, it is possible to connect the DRL to the marker lamps in the same way (if incandescent lamps are used as such, rather than LED ones!). In most cars I know, marker lamps are a priori connected in parallel, so that you can cling to the common negative wire from two DRL lights to any marker lamp.

Option 3 This is an option when DRLs turn on automatically only when the engine starts and runs. In this case, we connect the minus DRL also to the car body, and plus to the 30th relay contact. 87 contact is connected to the plus more powerful (you can connect to the positive terminal of the battery), 85 relay contact - to the mass of the car through the navigation lights, and 86 - to the reed switch, to one of its conclusions.

The second output of the reed switch is also connected to any plus nearby (it is possible from the generator or from there - from the battery). We start the car and moving the reed switch around the generator, we achieve the operation of the relay and the ignition of the DRL. We fasten the reed switch, previously packaged in heat shrink, using a plastic clamp to the generator in the position found and ready.

Option 4 If there is no reed switch. All the same, only 86 contacts - to the oil pressure lamp in the instrument panel.

That's all. In conclusion, I’ll say that using something that is done with your own hands is much more pleasant than using that made by strangers. Good luck in implementing yours and not yours, but, most importantly, interesting ideas.

On the territory of the Russian Federation, amendments to the rules of the road (SDA) have been in force for more than 8 years, according to which a moving vehicle in daylight should be indicated by dipped-beam headlights, fog lights (PTF) or daytime running lights (DRL). The use of head and fog lights for these purposes has a number of disadvantages. Therefore, drivers prefer to buy ready-made modules for navigation lights and install them in their cars on their own. How to connect daytime running lights so that their operation is safe and does not conflict with applicable laws?

Nuances of turning on the navigation lights

The main requirements regarding the installation, technical parameters and connection of navigation lights are listed in clause 6.19 of GOST R 41.48-2004. In particular, the electrical functional diagram of the DRL should be assembled so that the running lights automatically turn on when the ignition key is turned (engine start). At the same time, they should automatically turn off if the headlights are turned on.

Clause 5.12 of this standard states that headlamps (FGS) should only be switched on after the dimensions are turned on, with the exception of short-term warning signals. With the independent connection of DRL, this feature must be taken into account.

The correct connection of DRL is not limited to a well-thought-out functional diagram. It's time to think about the stabilization unit for LEDs. In the running lights themselves, the role of the current limiter is played by resistors, however, due to voltage drops, resistors cannot limit the current at the same level. That is why the voltage stabilizer in the connection circuit of the navigation lights is extremely necessary. Otherwise, the life of the LED DRL modules is significantly reduced due to the constant changes in the on-board voltage. Some motorists say that you can connect running lights without a stabilizer.

Connecting and installing an LED driver is a waste of time, because DRLs on LEDs have been shining for months without any stabilization ...

However, this statement is easy to dispute. The fact is that with each voltage surge on the LED module more than 12 V appears, the direct current through the LEDs exceeds the nominal value, which leads to overheating of the emitting crystal. The brightness of the LEDs decreases, such DRLs will no longer be able to carry out their immediate task - to warn drivers of oncoming vehicles from afar, and eventually begin to flicker and fail.

Using LED DRLs without a voltage stabilizer means throwing out at least several hundred rubles each year on new modules and spending time replacing them.

For ease of understanding, the diagrams below are shown without the use of a stabilizer.

Simplest scheme

The simplest scheme for enabling DRL when starting the engine is shown in the figure. The positive wire is connected to the “+” terminal of the ignition switch. The negative wire is mounted on the machine body in a convenient place. In this form, the circuit has a significant drawback. LED running lights will emit light all the time while turning the ignition key. In addition, their work is not consistent with the work of the remaining headlights, which means that it does not meet the requirements of GOST.

Switching on through dimensions or dipped beam

The second version of the DRL connection scheme involves the use of the power circuit of a marker light. For this, the positive wire from the navigation lights is directly connected to the "+" from the battery. In turn, the negative wire is connected to the “+” side light, which is currently electrically neutral. As a result, the following current flow path is formed: from the “+” battery through the LEDs to the size, and then through the bulb to the housing, which serves as the minus of the entire circuit. Due to the low current consumption (tens of mA), the LEDs begin to glow, and the lamp spiral remains off.
If the driver turns on the parking lights, then +12 V appears on the plus of the size, the potentials on the DRL wires are aligned and the LEDs go out. The circuit goes into normal mode, that is, the current flows through the side light bulbs.

This circuit design solution has several drawbacks:

  • running lights remain in operation when the engine is off, which contradicts the current rules;
  • the circuit will not work if the dimensions also include LEDs;
  • the circuit will not work correctly if powerful SMD LEDs are placed in the DRL, the rated current of which is commensurate with the current of the bulb;
  • for safety reasons, an additional fuse must be installed.

This connection method can be improved by connecting the positive lead of the LED module not with the “+” battery, but with the “+” ignition switch, thereby getting rid of the first drawback.
Some motorists use the inclusion of running lights through a passing lamp. That is, when the dipped beam is turned on, the DRLs automatically go out, and in other cases they work. In addition to the above disadvantages, this method does not comply with GOST R 41.48-2004 and traffic rules.

When parking the car in the dark, marker lights are used to indicate it, the use of DRL traffic rules is prohibited.

Connection via 4 contact relays from a generator or oil sensor

The following two methods have a common basis and involve the operation of daytime running lights only after starting the engine. The DRL switching circuit from the generator is based on the switching of four contact relays and a reed switch.
The contacts of the DRL relay are connected as follows:

  • 85 - on the positive wire to the dimensions;
  • 86 - to any reed switch;
  • 87 and the second output of the reed switch - on the "+" battery.

After checking the reliability of all contacts, go to the setting. To do this, start the engine and, moving the reed switch near the generator, achieve its operation and a stable glow of DRL. Then the reed switch is hidden in a thermotube and, with the help of nylon ties, is fixed in the found place.

At the time of starting the engine, and then the generator, the contacts of the reed switch and relay are closed, supplying voltage to the LEDs of the navigation lights. At the same time, the dimensions lamps remain turned off, since the current through the relay coil is small in order to ignite them.

In the absence of a reed switch, you can power the DRL from the oil pressure sensor. In this case, the 86th contact is connected to the oil pressure lamp. The rest of the circuitry is duplicated.
Both schemes have a common flaw. They can not be used if LEDs are installed in the dimensions.

Connection via 5 pin relay

Now it's time to learn how to connect the running lights through a five-pin relay. The scheme is the most universal, and assembled in order to eliminate the disadvantages of the previous options.
First, about connecting a relay for DRL:

  • 30 - to the positive conclusions of LED modules;
  • 85 - to the positive wire of the marker lamp;
  • 86 - to the car body;
  • 87a - to “+” from the ignition;
  • 87 - do not connect (insulate).

The circuit works with five contact relays as follows. When the key is rotated, a voltage of +12 V is applied to the DRL, thereby including them. If you turn on the side lights or headlights, the relay will open contact 87a and close the inactive contact 87. As a result, the DRL will go out and the dimensions will turn on. The scheme fully complies with the requirements of GOST and SDA and can work with marker lights even on the basis of LEDs.

However, the scheme still has one negative point - the DRL will turn on immediately after turning the ignition switch. That is, if you turn the key in the ignition switch, but do not start the car, the DRL will burn.

Despite the existing drawback, the circuit is quite successful, but in order to properly connect the DRL through a five contact relay, it is necessary to supplement the circuit with a voltage regulator.

This inclusion option is interesting in that the current path through the running lights is independent. This allows you to install in the headlights of dimensions and DRL light sources of any type and power.

DRL control unit

The most reliable and easiest option is to connect the DRL without a relay, but using a special control unit for navigation lights. It provides the inclusion of DRL after starting the engine, guarantees safe operation, protects against overloads and can be installed on cars with any type of lamp, including LED.

Unfortunately, among the whole variety of industrially manufactured DRL blocks, the overwhelming majority does not comply with GOST and has a mediocre build quality.

This concerns, first of all, products from AliExpress, which does not meet the requirements in almost all aspects.

Among the whole variety, only 2 options can be noted: the Russian DRL DayLight + control unit and German products from Philips and Osram. The DayLight + control unit was developed by Russian radio engineer Isachenkov Fedor, taking into account all the features of the car's on-board network and has a number of positive aspects:

  • there is a built-in voltage stabilization;
  • full compliance with GOST;
  • the maximum long-term power of the load is 36 watts (for DRL, much less is required);
  • simplest connection diagram.

In addition to the above points, the DayLight + unit is universal and is suitable for all cars with an on-board network of 12 volts, and also has good build quality and a high degree of protection against moisture and dust.
German products from Philips and Osram also have all the above advantages of the DayLight + unit, however, German control units are delivered only in conjunction with daytime running lights and have a higher cost.

In accordance with the rules of the road in many countries, daytime running lights are a type of optics that must always be turned on while driving. Therefore, many car owners are faced with the need to install DRL on their vehicles. What is the connection diagram of DRL with disconnection and how to implement it - read below.

Destination DRL

To connect correctly, you must have at least a minimum experience with an electrician. Before we tell you how to connect DRL according to GOST, we will analyze the purpose of this type of optics. Running lights are external lighting elements used to indicate the dimensions of a vehicle during daylight hours. As a rule, when installing, car owners use LED light sources.

Usually the optics are connected to the dimensions or, but if necessary, a separate button can be used to control the headlights. Also, the automatic inclusion of DRL can be done using flashlights.

Installation of navigation lights

Where and how to connect optics?

To begin, we suggest learning how to install DRL, the basic rules:

  1. Installation of navigation lights should be made on the surface of the bumper of the car, which should be a view in the direction of the reference axis. Install the lights in such a way that their distance from the edge of the car was no more than 40 cm. If the devices are not installed correctly, this could result in a fine for the car owner.
  2. Before installing daytime running lights, you need to consider that their installation is possible only on cars, but not on trailers. There should be two lights in total.
  3. The connection scheme of daytime running lights provides for their installation at a distance of 0.25 to 1.5 m above the ground. Moreover, their installation should be carried out only on the front side of the car.
  4. During installation, it should be borne in mind that the direction of light of the optics in any case should be forward.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights and their connection should be made so that the optics turn on automatically. That is, when the ignition is turned on or when the power unit is started, without using additional controls. Accordingly, the lights should also turn off when the ignition is turned off.
  6. A car owner installing DRL should be aware that the area of \u200b\u200bthese sources should be lit at least 40 cm, while the light intensity should vary in the region of 400-800 cd. If you use certified optics, it must be marked accordingly.
  7. As for the color of the glow, in any case, it should be white.

Instructions for connecting daytime running lights

So, if you decide to connect the daytime running lights with your own hands, then you have several options for connecting them to the botnet. We will consider each of them (the author of the video is the Igrok 777 channel).

Option 1

To begin with, the connection diagram of daytime running lights with automatic shutdown when the engine is stopped is shown. It should be noted that the connection of DRL according to this scheme will fully comply with traffic rules, especially since it was tested on all domestic machines. A speed sensor is used as a source of vehicle traffic information.

Contacts 1-1 of the circuit should be connected to the dimming control circuit, in particular, to terminal 85. In the event that you want only DRLs to work on the machine with activated ignition, and not the dimensions, then the contacts are connected in parallel. To implement this wiring diagram, you need any relay that is equipped with an opening pair of contacts.

Option 2

According to this scheme, the connection of the navigation lights will be carried out when the power unit is launched and the side lights are off. This option can also be implemented on any domestic car, and data on the operation of the motor in this case will be transmitted through the engine fluid pressure controller. All information from this sensor will be transmitted from the tidy. The optics activation procedure can be carried out both through the dimensions and through the low beam (the author of the video is channel 2673Kostya).

But if you want to implement the circuit, then make sure that the oil pressure controller is fully operational, otherwise the signal will be incorrect. Accordingly, the functionality of the optical system as a whole will be disrupted.

Option 3

Another option, how to connect running lights, can be implemented using the steering column dipped beam switch. This method involves controlling the headlights after the engine is started - accordingly, when the engine stops, the running lights automatically turn off. To implement this scheme, you need to prepare two diode light sources that are not very powerful in advance, and then connect them in series.

The wires are soldered to the light sources, their total length should be no more than 40 cm. After completing these steps, you will need to connect the lamps themselves, while observing the polarity, otherwise they will not work. After this, the dashboard is dismantled and disassembled, the contact should be connected to output X1.

Next, a button or switch is removed by which the navigation lights will be controlled. The other end of the cable should be connected to the connector. After the optics are connected, the button or switch is put in place, the operation of the DRL is checked.

Overview of Key Management Devices

Before you connect daytime running lights, you will need several components, in particular if you use one of the above schemes:

  1. The regulator to be added to the circuit. With this device, optics will be automatically activated.
  2. Directly themselves DRL. If you want the headlights to work for a long time, then it is better not to buy cheap Chinese products - they usually have a lower life. Moreover, the quality of the glow of Chinese diodes is usually lower.
  3. As stated above, you will also need a relay, and it is important that it has an opening pair of contacts.
  4. Controller. This device will also be used to control headlights.

Conclusion

The procedure for installing DRL requires the car owner to have certain skills. If you have never encountered such a task before and cannot distinguish a voltage regulator from a controller, then we would advise you to entrust this task to specialists. If you make mistakes during the work, this can lead to inoperability of the optics as a whole, which can be an unpleasant “surprise” if you move in the dark.

Video “A simple way to connect DRL without using a relay”

The video below describes a fairly simple and understandable way to connect DRLs at home without using a relay (the author of the video is Artem Kvantov).

To highlight the vehicle on the road during daylight hours, it is equipped with daytime running lights. Their installation is optional, because you can use headlamps, but in this lighting there are a number of disadvantages. You can choose, install and connect DRLs in a car yourself even without special knowledge in electrical engineering

What are daytime running lights

Daytime running lights (DRL) are a light source that is directed forward and improves the visibility of the vehicle (TC) when driving during daylight hours. In 2010, a decree was issued in Russia that states that all vehicle owners must move in the daytime with the dipped headlights turned on. If we turn to statistics, then the number of accidents after the entry into force of the decision has significantly decreased. This implies the high efficiency of the use of DRL. In addition, such lighting allows you to give the car a certain personality.

Appointment DRL

So, we found out that LED lights allow you to designate a car on the road in daylight, and this is especially important in bright sunny weather or in summer rain. If you turn on the side lights, then the vehicle will go unnoticed, which is associated with a lower power of the emitted light. The light from the dimensions is suitable for night time. Some motorists may ask a question - what is the difference between DRL and dipped headlights? Yes, you can ride with a passing light, it is not prohibited by law, but there are some nuances that you need to know about:

  1. The life of lamps and optics in general is reduced. When using expensive lighting equipment, its replacement will require considerable financial costs.
  2. When you turn on the low beam, the side lights are simultaneously turned on, the dashboard is also highlighted. This leads to an increase in energy consumption and, accordingly, increased fuel consumption.

From the above we can conclude: the purchase and installation of DRL will be the right decision. There is an opinion that this type of lighting can be replaced by fog lights (PTF), but in fact, everything is not so. In foglights, the power consumption is similar to the power of the dipped headlights.

Daytime running lights allow you to mark the car on the road during daylight hours and make traffic safer

Benefits

The design in question consists of LED elements. DRLs are endowed with a special mode of operation when they are connected when the motor starts. You can do this by choosing one of the following connection schemes for lights or installing equipment with a control unit. When you turn on the dipped headlights, the power of the DRL decreases by 50%, as a result of which this light source works as additional dimensions. Equipping a car with running lights simultaneously solves several problems:

  1. No need to constantly remember about turning on the headlights.
  2. LEDs are characterized by much lower power consumption compared to conventional lamps that are used in headlights.
  3. Compared to high beams, DRL does not blind oncoming drivers.
  4. The light beam in daytime running lights has an increased size of the light spot.

One of the important advantages of DRL is their special development for designating vehicles on the road. Compared to the dipped headlights, they give more light, which is noticeable by other drivers.

The installation of DRL has several advantages, one of which is the high brightness of the glow, in contrast to the dipped beam

How to choose

Many car owners are wondering about the choice of DRL. There are many options for this lighting system, and sometimes it’s not very easy to make a choice. To make the right decision, you need to consider the size, shape, place where the equipment will be installed. In addition, attention is paid to the brightness of the glow and the manufacturer. Let us dwell on each moment in more detail.

In form and in size, DRLs can be very diverse. The housing shape of the LED equipment can be round, oblong, triangular or square. Structures from separate parts interconnected by a wire are also possible. Before you purchase and install one or another option, you need to find out whether it will fit the dimensions and how it will look on your car. It is important to determine the installation location in accordance with GOST and taking into account the bumper of the car. Today, the most popular are rectangular-shaped DRLs in a molded case. Their installation is possible on almost any machine, which will make it more attractive.

Now for the brightness of the glow. Basically, the system in question consists of two blocks that are mounted on the left and right on the front of the car. Each of the blocks includes a certain number of LEDs (1-12 pcs.). Depending on the number of elements, the brightness of the glow will be different. The standard block of daytime running lights consists of 5 LEDs, but this option is not suitable for every car. The arrangement of elements can be performed at the bottom, top or in the middle. An important point: the color of the glow of the diodes should be white, that is, a temperature of 5-6 thousand K (kelvin) and a light intensity of 400 cd (candela).

The life, characteristics and overall performance of the LED equipment will depend on the choice of the manufacturer. The most popular in the field of optics are companies such as Hella, Osram, Philips. The equipment of these companies is of high quality and reliability. There are a number of other manufacturers, but they are inferior in terms of light characteristics of the brands overpowered above.

DRLs have various forms, characteristics, design features, can be installed in different places in the front of the car

How to choose the right DRL? The main rule that should be guided by should be a high brightness of the glow of LED elements. It is advisable to choose those devices that have a consumption current of 0.5–1 A. At the same time, power is far from always an indicator of the efficiency of daytime running lights. Some experts are of the opinion that the light beam of LED lights should be in the range of 550-700 cd. It is this kind of light that makes the vehicle visible from a distance of more than 1 km. In addition to the rectangular shape, round is no less popular, since such running lights are characterized by the effective operation of reflectors.

Preference should also be given to those devices whose case is made of aluminum. This allows them to be equipped with more powerful LED elements, since the metal is endowed with high heat transfer, which contributes to better cooling when installing light sources with high efficiency. If you consider the best option from the point of view of installation, then you should pay attention to those devices that have a direct connection to the battery, bypassing the ignition system. The principle of operation of such equipment involves switching on when a certain voltage of the vehicle's on-board network is reached.

Legal regulations for the installation of DRL

It is important to know and take into account the requirements for the selection and installation of LED lights:

  • the number of LED blocks should be no more than 2 pcs .;
  • installation of DRL on trailers is prohibited;
  • inclusion of running lights should occur automatically;
  • the lighting unit must be round or rectangular;
  • depending on the location of the DRL, the size may vary: smaller devices are installed on the air intake, a larger bumper;
  • lED blocks should have a brightness of 150-330 lumens, while the number of elements and their size is chosen independently.

During installation, it is important to consider:

  • instead of running lights, you can use high beam headlights or fog lights;
  • there are no special requirements for the connection diagram;
  • daytime lights should be located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from the edge of the car body;
  • between DRL, the distance should be at least 60 cm, and with a vehicle width of less than 130 cm, it can be reduced to 40 cm;
  • during installation, the running lights are directed forward, while the horizontal angle should be 20 ˚, and the vertical angle 10 ˚;
  • operation of navigation lights with a stroboscopic effect is prohibited;
  • lEDs should light up when starting the engine and turn off after turning on the head optics.

It is worth noting that the independent installation of DRL is allowed and legal in accordance with RF regulation No. 720, the validity of which dates back to September 2009. In this case, it is important not to fall under the restrictions of GOST, which requires certification of compliance with any changes in the design of the vehicle.

Installation of DRL on a car should be subject to current regulations

How to install on a car do it yourself

First of all, it is worth saying that for the installation of the system in question you will need the following list of materials and tools:

  • pliers;
  • nippers;
  • soldering iron;
  • insulated two-wire wire;
  • lED blocks;
  • 12V relay;
  • reed switch;
  • single wire;
  • clamps made of plastic.

Depending on the scheme and installation location, the list may be different. In the case of using Chinese-made DRLs, it is recommended that the body be sealed before installation to prevent water from entering inside. Consider several options for schemes with which you can connect DRL.

Schemes for connecting daytime running lights

One of the easiest options is to automatically turn on the navigation lights when you turn on the ignition and start the engine. The circuit does not have any additional elements: LED equipment is connected to the power supply of the on-board network: plus the ignition switch, minus the ground (body). With this installation, you do not need special skills and knowledge regarding electrical engineering.

Scheme implementing the inclusion of daytime running lights automatically when the ignition is turned on

There is another scheme that is similar to the first, but the difference is that the driving lights turn off when the dipped headlights are turned on. The differences are that the positive wire is connected, as in the previous circuit, and the negative wire is connected to the "+" dipped beam lamps. The operation of such a circuit is due to the fact that conventional lamps are characterized by a higher current consumption than LEDs and lower resistance. As a result, the lamp will not work even in full light, and this will not affect the operation of the navigation lights in any way. At the moment of switching on the low beam, a “+” will appear on the negative wire of the DRL, which will lead to their disconnection. But at the same time, the inclusion of high beams will lead to the launch of navigation lights. In this case, DRL can be connected to the dimensions.

The scheme in which DRLs are launched when the side lights are turned on

For the next circuit, you will need an element such as a reed switch. In it, DRLs work when the engine starts and runs. We connect the negative wire from the LED equipment to ground, and the positive lead to 30 relay contact, 87 contact to the “+” battery or any wire with a large cross-sectional diameter, 85 relay contact connect to the total mass, 86 to one of the reed contacts. The second output of the reed switch is connected to any “+”, for example, to the battery or generator. Next, we start the engine and by moving the reed switch we find the position at which the relay will operate and the LEDs will work. We mount the reed switch, which is previously placed in the heat shrink tube, using a plastic screed to the generator in the appropriate position. If there is no reed switch, then you can redo the circuit somewhat by connecting 86 contact with the oil pressure lamp, which is located on the instrument panel. As a result, the navigation lights will light when the engine is started.

The inclusion of DRL can be implemented when starting the engine through the use of a reed switch

Installation locations

Many car owners install LED lighting far from the rules. Therefore, you need to understand in what places you can install this type of lighting equipment:

  1. One of the installation methods is on the radiator grill from below. The car owner chooses running lights based on his preferences.
  2. Installation of DRL from the bottom or top of the grille, using LED strip. This is one of the options that is not considered by law as DRL, since the LED strip is more an element of tuning than an element of lighting.
  3. Installation of LEDs around the perimeter of the grille. Option does not comply with vehicle safety rules.
  4. Installation of LED strip in the head optics. Widely distributed on VAZ cars of the tenth generation. This installation method meets the requirements of operation and is approved for use.
  5. Installation of daytime running lights in the places provided for PTF (fog). This option is approved for use and meets safety requirements. In most cases, round lights are used for this method. But since you can use fog lights instead of running lights, this option is not very popular.

Installation and Connection Process

We start the work by selecting a place. At this stage, it is important to take into account not only the dimensions of the car and the mounting method, but also recommendations for installation. Running lights must be placed at a height of 350 mm to 1500 mm from the roadway. The minimum height is considered to be 250 mm, but if the car is operated with a load, the body will lower. This point needs to be considered. Depending on what type of vehicle the DRL is installed on, the optimal height parameter can range from 400 mm to 800 mm.

The DRL kit, depending on the specific model of the device, consists of LEDs, wires, brackets for fastening, instructions and a control unit

The next stage is the installation of navigation lights. When buying equipment in the kit should contain everything you need: LEDs, wires, instructions and other materials. When installing DRL in the grill, it will need to be removed. The place where the bracket will be mounted must be washed and degreased. Then double-sided tape is glued, the shape of which matches the shape of the bracket. After removing the protective layer, a bracket is attached to the tape. Before the clamp is fixed, pull the wire that goes from the body. Experts recommend making the mount more reliable and not relying only on adhesive tape. In this case, holes are drilled, and fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws. Even when mounted on tape, fixation is performed on self-tapping screws.

One of the most popular DRL installation sites is the grille

The next step is to install the control unit. It is best to place the unit near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating. Since the enclosure is airtight and waterproof, no additional protective measures are necessary. The unit is connected according to the standard scheme:

  • The red wire is connected to the “+”, the black to the “-” battery.
  • The orange wire should be connected to the dipped beam headlights or to the dimensions. The purpose of the orange wire is to turn off the DRL when the headlights are turned on. If you do not connect this wire, then the LEDs will shine too brightly and dazzle oncoming drivers.
  • When the head optics are turned off, the LEDs should glow brightly.
  • The lights are connected to the unit with a corresponding cable on a detachable connection.

The standard connection of DRL to the battery terminals, which is the most reliable option for powering

After the work done, it is necessary to check whether everything is done correctly. When the engine starts, the DRL should light up, when you turn on the headlights - turn off, and when you turn off the engine, should go out completely. If the LEDs glow about 20 seconds after the engine is turned off, then this is considered normal. After you have checked and made sure that the system is working correctly, the central module is fastened and the LED blocks are fixed. To do this, they are inserted and snap into the installation bracket.

Next, the wiring is neatly laid under the hood and secured with plastic ties. Important: Do not fasten the wires to the fuel line, pressure hoses and radiator tube. Upon completion of all operations, the grill is replaced. Above, the option with a control unit was considered. If not, then you will need to install a relay on the low beam circuit in accordance with the above diagrams.

The DRL control unit is located near the battery, but away from the engine to avoid overheating

DIY control unit

If you understand electrical engineering, then why not assemble the unit for DRL yourself. The principle of operation of such a unit is that it receives voltage when the ignition is turned on, and it determines the operation of the engine by the frequency of the pulses on the ignition coil. If the pulse presence time is more than 5 s, then the DRL will automatically turn on. If there are no pulses within the specified time, then the lighting will not turn on. In addition, the unit turns off the LEDs when the head light is turned on.

It is connected as follows:

  • power is taken at any point where it is present when the ignition is turned on;
  • for pulse counting, the connection is made to the ignition coil;
  • the signal for turning on the main lighting is taken from the point at which 12 V appears when the head light is turned on;
  • at the output of the device, a car relay is used with a consumption current of no more than 200 mA at a voltage of 12 V, while the switched current should be 30–40 A;
  • negative wire is connected to ground.

With sufficient knowledge in the field of electronics, you can assemble a DRL control unit circuit yourself

DRL connection through the generator

Consider how you can power the daytime running lights from the generator using a standard automotive relay (5 contacts). The connection process is as follows:

  • The 30th relay contact is connected to terminal D of the generator;
  • The 80th is connected to the “+” of the dimensions;
  • 87th - connects to the “+" LED blocks;
  • 86th - body weight.

In addition to the relay, the circuit involves the use of a button that must be connected to the circuit between the 30th relay contact and the generator. As a result, the device will work as follows:

  • When starting the engine from the generator goes "+" through the button to the 30th relay contact. Further, the current flows to the “+” contacts of the fluorescent lights, which leads to the LEDs light up.
  • When the side lights are turned on, voltage arises between the relay contacts (85 and 86), the coil activates and the contacts close (30 and 87). At the 87th output, there is no voltage and the DRLs are turned off.

Installation and connection in standard headlights

Daytime running lights can be built into standard optics, for example, in PTF. To do this, you only need to redo the fog lights so that they turn on properly, while the fog lights themselves will work as before. To implement the plan, you will need two relays for 4 and 5 contacts. Connection is made as follows:

  • 85 the contact of the first relay is connected to ground;
  • 86 contact goes to the “+” position lights or dipped beam;
  • 30 contact connect to 87 of the second relay;
  • from 87 contacts there is a connection to the “+” output of the headlights, while the PTF connection remains untouched;
  • 86 contact of the second relay is connected to the “+” generator;
  • 30 contact of the second relay is connected by a wire to the “+” battery through a fuse;
  • 85 contact of the second relay is connected to ground.

It is worth noting that when you connect the 86th contact of the second relay to the generator, the DRL will work immediately as soon as the engine starts. If the connection is made through the ignition switch, the LEDs will light up after the ignition is turned on. Both options will be correct, and the choice is yours.

As one could understand, connecting DRLs is possible in different ways. In this case, either a relay or a special control unit for the lighting system can be used. Which option to give preference, everyone chooses their own. It was described above not only what daytime running lights are intended for, but also possible installation methods and connection schemes. As a result, equipping your car with such lighting will not be difficult.

Installing daytime running lights on a car is not a complicated procedure and if necessary it can be performed by everyone. The main thing is to familiarize yourself with possible wiring diagrams, installation locations and carry out a neat installation, adhering to certain rules and recommendations.

Or DRL, are becoming more accessible and popular. Manufacturers give a lot of arguments for their installation, including minimal fuel consumption due to lower power consumption, longer life and high quality.

Since 2010, Russian legislation has introduced their mandatory use with alternating inclusion of dipped-beam headlights in the daytime. EU regulations require DRLs on all new car models. Also, their installation is quite possible on older cars, thereby increasing their attractiveness and safety.

The market for the supply of daytime running lights is extremely high and, it would seem, is saturated with similar options. The modules are so simple that even a novice amateur can install them. Meanwhile, installation is a serious matter, and before you get started, take a look at a few details that will affect your choice.

What are daytime running lights for?

With the advent of the summer period, relatively better driving conditions come in - dry weather, long days and plenty of sunshine. But it is the latter indicator that is not always the driver's allies. It often blinds, causes eye fatigue.

According to some studies, the use of daytime running lights increases the visibility of the vehicle on the road, which helps to avoid many accidents. In 2011, in the EU countries, all manufactured cars must have DRL installed, in Russia a year earlier it is in force where it is required to turn on the light (either fog lights, or dipped-beam headlights, or daytime running lights) in the daytime. What is the difference between these types of car lighting?

On the video - installation of DRL:

Better visibility

Daytime running lights serve to increase the visibility of the car during the day. Unlike the dipped beam, they are equipped with powerful LED lights, so that the modules become more visible to other road users. In addition, these lights are designed in such a way that they are. Daytime running lights come on when the car starts, but you can only ride with them during the day. When it gets dark, you need to switch to the dipped beam, automatically turning off the DRL.

Lower fuel consumption

Another advantage of daytime running lights is their energy efficiency. They consume only 10% of the energy needed for standard low beam headlamps. Daytime running lights have a huge impact on fuel consumption, as one module consumes 6.8 watts, that is, a total of less than 14 watts. For comparison, one halogen low beam lamp consumes 60 watts, which is 8 times more. In addition, DRLs operate up to 10 thousand hours, which is equivalent to 500,000 km of travel.

Modern design

LED technology, which is used in the production of daytime lights, is known as one of the most innovative and.

Do-it-yourself installation

Some manufacturers suggest installing DIY daytime running lights. Such kits include:

  1. Two LED modules with wires and plugs.
  2. Control block.
  3. Components for installation:
    • two pressure brackets;
    • long cables (6 meters);
    • simple connector;
    • bolts
    • latches;
    • installation instructions.

Nevertheless, installing DRL, you need to check in the nearest workshop.

How to mount daytime running lights

Their installation is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance. To do this, it’s enough to have basic tools, such as a screwdriver. But, before deciding to assemble the modules, you need to choose the right lighting model.

On the video - installation of daytime running lights on the VAZ:

In accordance with the position of the daylight:

  1. Should automatically turn on when the engine start or stop device is in the working position.
  2. Should turn off automatically when fog lights or low beam headlights are turned on.
  3. The front, side and rear position lamps, side lamps and the rear lamp will not turn on if the daytime running lights are on.
  4. Must be on the front of the car, white, placed symmetrically and at the same height.
  5. Must not protrude outside the vehicle.

DRL selection

When buying, you should carefully look at the light. The lights must be appropriately marked, which is proof of their use in Russia. Unfortunately, the cheapest kits often do not have the statutory characteristics. The glass must bear the approval stamp E along with the identification number of the issuing country.

The RL reflector is also required - designation of the version number of the rules according to which the certificate was issued, the certificate number and the name of the manufacturer. Marking must be strong, indelible and visible on the car. These requirements are met by a number of daytime companies, such as Hella, Philips or Osram.

Installation height

Daytime running lights cannot be installed more than 1500 mm or less than 200 mm from the ground, and the distance between them must not be less than 600 mm. If the width of the vehicle is less than 1300 mm, the distance between the lights shall be 400 mm. They can also protrude beyond the contour of the vehicle and must be installed 400 mm from the edge of the vehicle.

System installation

What is your opinion on the self-installation of daytime running lights?

After the adoption of the law on the use of daytime running lights (DRL) when driving without fail, the majority of motorists “made a fuss” so that these attributes were installed on their vehicles. The adoption of such a law is a decision to improve safety on the roads of highways and large settlements.

Each motorist should have information on how to install the daytime running lights. The execution of this procedure is actually not as complicated as it initially seemed. The correct approach and following the instructions will help you avoid common mistakes and save a lot of time and nerves.

The main task of DRL is optimal vehicle visibility for other drivers. In addition to the designating function, they play the role of a design element that unties the hands of car tuning lovers.

The primary colors of the LED lights used by drivers are bright blue or white. The advantage of this color lies in good lighting and efficiency.

Types of daytime running lights

Front emitters of lamps, unlike ordinary headlights, are special devices for industrial production. They have many advantages, for example: reduced fuel consumption and battery saving. Installation of DRL does not cause any difficulties.

Few requirements

When performing the installation, it is necessary to comply with some requirements of GOST. This will allow you to mount daytime lights without unpleasant consequences and problems.

GOST requirements for the installation of DRL

What you need to know during installation:

  • 60 cm is the minimum distance between the lights;
  • 25 cm is the minimum height measuring the distance between the ground and the lower point of the installed lights;
  • 40 cm is the maximum distance from the extreme point of the vehicle body.

Important! The use of DRL as the main headlights or dimensions is unacceptable, since they serve as auxiliary lighting. Installation of more than 2 lights is prohibited.

Installation procedure

DRL device

Turning on the lights along with starting the engine indicates that the installation was carried out correctly, in accordance with all instructions. Some drivers prefer installing an additional toggle switch, which is responsible for turning the system on and off.

Caution! Neglect of accepted norms and standards will entail the creation of unpleasant moments associated with the road automobile inspection.

The main thing is to start

Gorbachev’s famous phrase, like nothing else, helps with motivation to achieve a specific goal. The beginning of our installation process is the acquisition of the necessary navigation lights in an auto parts store. There are many different manufacturers and even more models, so an inexperienced person can easily get confused. In this case, it is better to contact the seller or consultant. Most of the produced lights meet all GOST standards and are ready for subsequent installation.

When approaching the procedure, motorists must take into account certain requirements:

  • lED brightness and their rated power;
  • technical characteristics and distinguishing features of their vehicle model;
  • size, shape and type of front bumper.

DRL installation kit

The installation location will depend on the block (meaning its size and shape), but this does not create problems, because regardless of the shape (rectangular or oval), the dimensions of the block are small. Considering the main and “favorite” places for installing emitters, one can not help but mention the air intake and bumper, where most often motorists put LEDs.

We carry out the installation step by step

This guide explains how to install universal LED daytime running lights on any vehicle. Installation is quite simple, you just need to give this procedure a little time.

Step 1. Insert the wire into the bracket.

We begin the installation procedure

Step 2 Install the bracket. Since these are universal daylight lamps, you can install them anywhere that appeals to you. Most often, choose a place at the bottom of the bumper.

Most often choose a place on the bumper

Step 3 After installing the bracket, you can fix the daytime running lights on the bracket.

Gently attach the flashlight

Step 4. After you install the DRL using the bracket, connect the wires and lay them near the battery / fuse box.

We carry out the connection of wires

Step 5 Use plastic cable ties to secure the wire along the bumper. If you wish, you can choose another “wire path”.

Securely fasten the wire with cable ties

Step 6 Locate the ACC on your fuse box, and press the red wire there. You can find the location of the ACC fuse using an electronic counter, clamping the black wire to the “minus” of the battery. Insert the tester handle into the fuse box in any empty slot and remember the places where the tester handle does not light up. Start the engine and check the slots that do not light. Find a place that glows only when the engine is running. This is an ACC place.

Use a special tester to search

Basically, when the engine is on, the indicator lights up. When the engine is turned off, the indicator, respectively, is also turned off. Press the black wire to the negative terminal of the battery

Step 9 The images in the installation guide allow you to easily complete this procedure.

The result of the work done will pleasantly surprise you

Having information on how to install daytime running lights in accordance with all standards and requirements, you can save yourself from possible problems with traffic police representatives and increase the level of security. Performing such “tuning” will have virtually no effect on the amount of fuel burned (consumption).

Video - How to install DRL on the VAZ 2106

Daytime running lights are designed to improve road safety. European studies have shown that the use of DRL reduces the number of road accidents by about 6%. However, for the whole five years, all the products of the European automobile industry have been supplied by DRL already at the factory.

Traffic regulations oblige drivers to provide daytime vehicle illumination. As such, dipped beam lights or fog lights can act. However, their constant use puts a strain on the battery; moreover, the lamps wear out.

Possible options for daytime running lights:

  1. Headlamps dipped when the engine is running;
  2. High beam headlights operating at reduced power;
  3. Fog lights (PTF) with a modified algorithm of work. When starting the ignition, they should turn on, and when turning on the headlights, go out.

An alternative is special daytime running lights (DRL). Newer car models are equipped with them in production. On an older model, on the VAZ 2101, for example, you can install the DRL kit yourself, quickly and easily.

Video tutorial on how to connect daytime running lights

Selection of daytime running lights

There are many different DRL kits on the market. The venerable European brands coexist with high-quality products from China. The main difference between them is the ratio of price and quality. The choice of a specific model depends on the preferences, needs and capabilities of the car owner.

The configurations of such lights are also quite a lot. The most common in-line configuration of lights. It is an LED strip enclosed in transparent plastic for correcting light output. There are options for the location of the diodes square or landing on flexible tapes.

DRLs of a higher class are equipped with special relays that allow simultaneous switching on with the start of the engine. In addition, such relays coordinate the operation of daytime running lights, as well as emergency lights.

In simpler versions, such systems are not provided, but if you have small skills and a pair of relays, you can organize them yourself. The installation of newly acquired DRLs can be entrusted to professionals, although it can also be done independently. The process is not complicated, but time consuming.

DIY running lights installation

Before installing DRL, you need to prepare the materials:

  • Actually a set of lights.
  • Shrink insulation (or electrical tape).
  • Plastic clips for wires.
  • Relays for organizing ignition start.

Next, you will need to determine the future location of DRL. Of course, they should be placed on the front of the body. Most often, this is a bumper or air intake, but you can attach them to the grille. Distributed and the installation in place of fog lights. When choosing the location of DRL on a car, you need to consider a number of traffic rules requirements:

  • The height of the DRL should not exceed 1500 millimeters or be less than 250 millimeters;
  • The distance from the overall edge of the vehicle to the outer edge of the lights should not exceed 400 millimeters;
  • The distance between the inner edges of the lighting fixtures should not exceed 600 millimeters. The minimum distance value for a car with an overall width of less than 1300 millimeters is reduced to 400 millimeters.

Fixing blocks to the body can be done in various ways. Double-sided tape is often supplied in the kit, but its reliability is in doubt, so it is better to provide for the possibility of mounting on self-tapping screws.

TIP: DRLs of Chinese-made lights are better treated with sealant, as there are known cases of water entering them. As a result, the diodes burn out, and it becomes necessary to replace them.

After mounting the DRL, you can start wiring. Naturally, before starting work, it is necessary to disconnect the battery. Correctly connect the lights will help the circuit included in the kit. If DRLs are installed that have a control unit, then you will probably have to look for a place for it under the hood. Stretched wires are best secured with special clamps, because under the hood there are a lot of heating elements that can damage the wiring.

If there is no such unit, then you will have to embed the relay in the dipped circuit. It is important not to forget to install a fuse in the DRL connection circuit. The hassle is not much more, and the benefits are obvious. For ease of use, you can put on the dashboard a special button to enable DRL.

If you have some skills in DRL, you can make it from fog lights. Such their use is not at all contrary to the law.
